Studying and volunteering in thailand...

Featured Replies

I need advice! I plan to study Thai language in Chiang Mai for 3 months followed by 12 months volunteering in Nan, Kanchanaburi and Pattaya.

I understand that I require an ed visa for the first 3 months followed by a one year non-immigrant 'O' visa to volunteer.

My problem is that I can only apply for the one year visa from my home country (UK) and cannot apply in advance for it to begin after those first 3 months. Am I right? Meaning I would have to return to the UK mid-travel.

Is there a better way for me to make my plans work?

Many Thanks.

If working as a volunteer for a organization it is possible to 90 day extensions or a one year extension with a government official's signature at immigration. In that case you would first get a single entry non-o visa at a nearby embassy or consulate.

Not sure you could even get a multiple entry non-o visa at the embassy in London for volunteer work.

Depends. If you just want an avenue to remain in Thailand there are plenty of better options. Why wouldn't you do it other way round. For only 3 months "study Thai language" heck you could do that on a setv

Dr Jack, I would like to learn a little more of the basics of the language at the beginning of the trip as i'll be volunteering in some remote places. But good to know i can do that with an setv, thanks.

Ubonjoe, are you saying that I can apply for a one year non-immigrant o visa from one of the countries surrounding thailand? Do you know how long this process takes? Thanks

I did not write that.

I wrote you may be able to get extensions of stay at immigration. You would first get s single entry non-o visa at a embassy for consulate and then extend the 90 day entry from it for 90 days or possibley one year.

Just to clarify on this - 1 Year Non-O-ME Visas for volunteering are not easy to get anywhere, and you would have to "border bounce" every 90 days even if you got one, since you only get 90-days permitted stay each time you use it to enter.

A single-Entry Non-O, which gives one 90-day permitted stay upon entry, is available at Thai consulates in Laos or Malaysia (possibly others), and requires paperwork from the organization you will be volunteer-working for.

In the last 30 days of the 90-days you get with that visa upon entry, you would apply at your local immigration office for an "extension of stay" (not a visa) - and again, using paperwork supplied by the organization you are volunteer-working for.  This paperwork may differ somewhat from what is needed for the visa.  The requirements/process can vary by immigration office, including how much time they give you before you have to return to the office for another extension-of-stay.
