April 13, 20197 yr Grassroots people to spend ฿16.13 bn during Songkran Praphorn Praphornkul BANGKOK, 12 April 2019 (NNT) -The Government Savings Bank’s (GSB) Economy Research Center has conducted a survey of public spending during the Songkran festival. The respondents are people with an monthly income of less than 15,000 baht. According to the survey, the respondents are using less money from loans, thanks to the government’s welfare scheme. The GSB President and Executive Officer, Chatchai Payuhanaveechai, said result of the survey have indicated that people in the grassroots group will spend about 16.13 billion baht, or about 3,670 baht per person, during Songkran. The figure is lower than last year because people are more cautious in their spending due to the high cost of living. Most of the spending will be on making merit with the average cost being 450 baht per person, followed by organizing parties with the average cost at 1,225 baht per person and giving money to family members with an average cost of 1,790 baht per person. This year, the number of people holding Songkran parties and returning to their home provinces will probably be higher than the previous year. The respondents’ financial resources mostly come from their income, followed by family members, savings, government welfare, and loans. When compared to last year, more people are now spending more money provided by the government’s welfare scheme while using less money from loans. -- © Copyright nnt 2019-04-13
