Nasa Satellite picture: Unhealthy smoke over Thailand

Featured Replies

The Thai authorities should be hanging their heads in shame. I thought 'face 'was all important here.  If so, they have lost a hell of a lot of it in these past weeks.

Face is important so what they will do is try to control the media and if they can't control the press they will shoot water and molasses into the air until the smoke clears.  By the way what happened to Prayut and his seven days I still see CM is dangerously high.

Unfortunately not to the likes of you ,,,or me . As foreigners we are not included in the face saving game unless WE  cause them to lose it ,,,not t'other way round lad .

"For more than a month, northern Thailand has been experiencing unhealthy, elevated levels of smoke and air pollution. "

It's actually been 6 months, but who's counting. When the rains stopped in October the pollution levels rose immediately as they do every year during this period. Simple formula for northern Thailand: No rain = lots of pollution in the air.

Sounds like another month to go. Then rains for 5 months yielding improved air quality, then we'll be quickly right back to this mess all over again well before the year is out.

Op title, 'Unhealthy smoke over Thailand.'

It actually says unhealthy levels of smoke and pollution.  I am not entirely convinced that there is such a thing as healthy smoke.

...It’s mind over matter.  And we foreigners don’t matter. Thais living in the North don’t fully accept that their government cannot or will not protect their environment, but unfortunately they live in a culture that expects them to accept their lot in life.  My own Thai wife doesn’t like it one bit, our doctors are privately enraged, but nobody dares to step out of line to publicly complain.  Imagine this scenario unfolding in any other civilized country and you’d see angry demonstrations and riots in the streets. Never in rural Thailand. Nothing will change and it is likely to continue or even worsen in future years unless weather patterns cause increased rainfall earlier in the wet season.  Humankind here will not create a satisfactory solution and insofar as Bangkokians are concerned, the north of this kingdom is a distant, unfortunate afterthought.

We're in middle, some heavy showers day before yesterday evening, blue sky afternoon, moon and some stars at night.

Last night up here around midnight.  Ash still falling down , swept the patio 3 times today .

Hmmmm. Perhaps you're right, but one type is certainly more enjoyable than the others.

We need to encourage the good kind to come.

Good smoke in, Bad smoke out.
