hi there

i'm writing on behalf of my girlfriend who is currently traveling in the south and is looking for sgi members (foreigners or thai) to chant. are there any regular meetings in Krabi, Phuket? how could she get in touch with them? Thankd for your help!

PS: Eva, that was me who sent you a message just a few minutes ago. just thought i'd post as well....

nicholas

There is SGT in Phuket - I'm not sure about a group for foreigners though. If you care to PM me I'll give you an e-mail address for someone who can provide information about Phuket. As far as Krabi is concerned. I did know one member there from England although I think that he returned home. But that was about four years ago now and I seem to remember him telling me that he practiced alone but there were some Thai members there

Could you please let me know the contact in Phuket as well?

Hello Everyone!

This is Rob - some of you know me - my partner and family have been living in Bangkok the last few years. We have chanted several times with the Rainbow group in Bangkok.

We send you all love and Diamoku in the new year!

As some of you know, I got a new job in Chiangmai, and now that the dust is starting to settle down from the move, I am hoping to contact members in the Chiangmai region. Does anyone have any leads?

Thank you for any leads you can offer. I will be visiting Bangkok Dec. 14th through Jan. 2, so I would love to see any of you.

Cheers!

~Rob

PS: my phone was stolen, so my number has changed. PM me for the new number if you would like to chat! :o

Hi Rob,

It's a long time since I lived in Chiang Mai so things will have changed too much for me to give any concrete advice there. But have you contacted one of the centres about this - Wiittayu for instance ? Or alternatively e-mail/phone Ashley and ask him to kindly find out for you. I do know of an Australian member in the same position as yourself in CM. I'll send her a PM asking her to contact you as I'm not sure that she visits the Buddhism forum that regularly. Then, at the very least, we have the nucleus of an SGI Rainbow Group in Chiang Mai.

Kindest regards

:o

Hello Rob! Nice to hear you settling down in Chiang Mai and sorry about your phone being stolen. There must be a centre in Chiang Mai, I think I have the picture of it in a portable calendar; will find it, translate the address for you and send it to you a.s.a.p. Take care for now and I'll also send you my telephone number by PM. Love

Unfortunately true. The nearest one is in Lampang. I think that's quite far from Chiang Mai. What do you think, Chutai?

For those interested:

The next English spoken Soka Gakkai meetings in Bangkok and Pattaya are scheduled as follows:

Bangkok - Witthayu centre in Lumphini - Saturday 13 and 20 November 10.30/11.00 am to 12.30 pm

Pattaya - Third Road soi 5 - Sunday 21 November 3 to 4.30 pm

The Study meeting in Bangkok on 13th will be a special event - a series of 5 personal experiences each based on a Gosho passage.

By giving these Gosho Experiences of doing our Human Revolution, we hope to inspire confidence that it is possible to be in the very best place at any moment to move the world in a good way.

Here are the 5 passages that will be the basis of each persons Gosho Experience -

"As I have often mentioned before, it is said that, where there is unseen virtue, there will be visible reward"........."Again, you must be on good terms with those who believe in this teaching, neither seeing, hearing, nor pointing out anything about them that may displease you. Calmly continue to offer prayers." from Unseen Virtue and Visible Reward, WND 907

"... No one can avoid problems, not even sages or worthies. Drink sake only at home with your wife, and chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. Suffer what there is to suffer, enjoy what there is to enjoy. Regard both suffering and joy as facts of life, and continue chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, no matter what happens. How could this be anything other than the boundless joy of the law? Strengthen your power of faith more than ever." - With deep respect, Nichiren (1276).

"Happiness in this World" http://www.sgilibrary.org/view.php?page=681

"There can be no discontinuity between past, present and future". Past, present and future are closely interrelated. "If you want to know the cause you formed in the past, observe the effect in the present. If you want to know the effect in the future, observe the cause you are forming now." - from the True Entity of Life, quoted in Selected Lectures on the Gosho. p75

"You should always talk with each other to free yourselves from the sufferings of birth and death and attain the pure land of Eagle Peak, where you will nod to each other and speak in one mind. The sutra reads, "Before the multitude they seem possessed of the three poisons or manifest the signs of distorted views. My disciples in this manner use expedient means to save living beings." from Flowering and Bearing Grain, p909

The following is an introductionary message from our Rainbow Group leader:

Sensei has said that we should live in an ocean of language, and we all know that "the voice does the Buddhas work". Through our association, we, the Rainbow Group members, are honing our lives through talking and listening, trying all the time to open ourselves ever more to the joys and sufferings of one another, so that we can each use our own struggles to guide, inspire, warn and illustrate the profound nature of each of our lives and missions.

The second half of this quotation is one of the first I ever latched upon, and still gives me a sense of freedom, and the absolute necessity to be who I am, to enable me to prove the power of the gohonzon, the power of my life. There is no light without the existence of the dark. There is no true happiness without the experience of natural sadness. In the same way there can be no enlightenment without the benighted nature. This is the reality of existence, and it is our harmonization with the Buddhist Law which illuminates how every single experience functions within the whole universal rhythm of eternal and infinite life.

Now is certainly the time for the members of the SGI to stand up and call out to all those around us with clear voices, to say that it is possible to live a happy, dignified, and energetic life, directed toward a great and noble goal, requiring all the courage of a person facing a raging enemy, all the compassion needed to understand the most arrogant people, and the wisdom to negotiate a reasoned path through the most complex of situations.

The Discussion meeting on the 20th will be our chance to reflect on our lives this year, and make determinations and set goals for 2009 together with the group.

Dear All,

First of all, it is really exciting to know that there are English speaking SGI meetings in Bangkok, as well as in other places in Thailand.

I am an SGI member since 1987, Italian, but living in Boston at the moment. As you may notice, I am not very familiar with this system yet, so I may have posted my question in the wrong place.

I will be possibly move to Bangkok in the next few months, depending on when I can find a job there, and would like to know if, should I be in Bangkok, is there anyone willing to chant with me? I do have my Omamori Gohonzon, but if I could meet members and chant in front of regular Gohonzon that would be very much appreciated.

Otherwise, can anyone provide the times when the SGT cultural center in Bangkok is open?

Thank you very mcuh to All,

Fabrizio

I have been doing some research on SGI but I haven't found any reliable resources (other than SGI and its members). As a former Ch'an (Zen) monk of more than 10 years I find it suspicious that there is no meditation involved as meditation and self-reflection are the point to most Buddhist practices but SGI instead does purely chanting. I haven't found any Mahayana Buddhist here in Chiang Mai but I would like to, not necessarily for practicing Buddhism but for conversation about Buddhist practice.

If you know about the Lotus Sutra and the origin of Nichiren Buddhism, it doesn't seem suspicious or even surprising. See the thread about it here. Japanese Pure Land doesn't stress meditation either.

Pure Land Buddhism (Jìngtǔzōng) says that Nirvana has become difficult to obtain through meditative practices thus Pure Land Buddhism teaches that only through devotion to Amitābha Buddha and looking towards Amida Buddha for guidance can one be reborn in the Pure Land. To me this sounds suspiciously like some popular Western religions. Buddhism is based in knowing for ones self and not on blind faith. Pure Land also speaks of "a perfect heavenly abode in which enlightenment is guaranteed" also sounds like a Western religious idea. In any event I'm not taking a shot at anyone or anyone's beliefs we all have to be comfortable with what we believe not what others believe, I'm just saying by chanting the name of the Buddha rather than self-reflection is a bit hard for me to buy into if it wasn't I mostly likely would have stuck with Roman Catholicism.

As far as Krabi is concerned. I did know one member there from England although I think that he returned home. But that was about four years ago now and I seem to remember him telling me that he practiced alone but there were some Thai members there

I used to practise in Koh Samui and later Krabi, and been back in UK for 4 years now. Do I know you, chutai?

From having been to an all-South Thailand Men's meeting, I got the impression I was the only farang SGT member in the south then.

As for getting in contact with local districts, I think the best way is the same as for any country, phone (or visit) the main centre, it's near Nonthaburi, Bangkok. There's contact info at http://www.sgt.or.th/th/about-sgt.htm but the website no longer seems to have an English translation.

<br /><br />There's a special chapter for foreigers living and visiting Thailand called the Rainbow Group, who meet monthly at the SGT Centre on Wittayoo Road, Bangkok. They have a discussion meeting for members and those interested this coming Saturday afternoon , 9th December. If anyone wishes a contact number in Thailand for further information then please feel free to PM me. But before Saturday afternoon (UK time) for details of the meeting specifically, as I'm flying out to the LOS myself on the same date. Otherwise, I'll respond to any other enquiries as when I'm able to next week. <img src="style_emoticons/default/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> <br /><br />Post Script<br /><br />With the greatest of respect. <img src="style_emoticons/default/jap.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":o" border="0" alt="jap.gif" /> <br /><br />The information given above is incorrect. The size of SGT, as of the last time I enquired, was some 15,000 members. This is born out by them having three very large centres in Bangkok and others elsewhere. I went to an SGT special meeting on Chinese New Year two years ago , which was attended by around 600 Bangkok based members at only Wittayoo. I would estimate that SGT must have more members than the 200 stated in Phet'buri, Cha-Am and Hua Hin districts alone.<br />

Hi Chutai, (nice name!)

You mentioned SGI in Phet'buri and Cha-Am in your post. I'm a member of SGI in London but I have a friend who was taken into Phet'buri hospital (I think) today - 16th Feb 2009 - with acute appendicitus and he's very, very ill. He is pretty much alone in Thailand and a bit frightened right now. His name's Brent Dawson. He doesn't chant himself - or only very occasionally - but he knows all about it as he used to live with me for six years and does believe it works (he saw how it worked in my life), he just can't quite believe it would work for him. Do you know of any members in Phet'buri who would chant for his health and recovery? I don't know whether they would be able to contact him or visit him in the hospital??? Or leave a text on his phone (in English)??? His number is (0066) 806547826 or the doctor there is Dr Marisat (?) Kriangsak (?) - sorry I have no idea how to spell Thai names but that's what her name sounded like. Thank you. Debra

PS. I almost forgot to give the doctor's number at the hospital in case Brent's phone is switched off while he's in there - it's (0066) 32417070. Or she may be the Administrator of the hospital, I'm not sure. But she definitely knows about Brent's operation - she was really worried he would die if he didn't have the operation in the next day or so. She's very nice. As I say, if it is possible for you to forward this message to any SGI members in Phet'buri or Cha Am. Brent lives in Cha Am on his own and really needs some support. Thanks again. Debra<br>

Ciao Fabrizio,

In Bangkok there are several members scattered around town, I'm sure they will be happy to meet up with you. There is one in particular who is also Italian and prepared to chant with others. His English is not so good so you might be able to help him/each other once you are here.

As far as I know, the centre in Lumphini, is open almost every day. I'm not sure about the others. If you read this thread a few pages earlier you will find the address and other information.

In the meantime I can get you in touch with Ashley, our Rainbow group leader, by personal message.

A presto!

Hello Debra

I'm sorry that it's so long since I've managed to reply to your post, but I don't log-on that often. It's interesting that your friend should have been in hospital in Phet'buri on the 16th of February as I was admitted to Phetcharat Hospital, Phe'tburi with chronic bronchitis on the 15th of February for 5 days - I'm pleased to add that I'm ok now. Please inform me how Brent is doing now. There are several members in Phet, although none speak English I could easily contact them and ask them to chant if need be and perhaps make a visit myself if we could locate the exact hospital in Phet; as there are three.

My best wishes

Hi Debra,

I'm a member from Chonburi province. Any news about Brent? I hope the operation went well and that he has recovered by now. Let us know when you have a chance please.

If you are still in Thailand, not far from the capital, this weekend there are two Rainbow meetings you or other people interested could go to, if you have time.

Object of last week's study meeting at the Wittayu Centre in Bangkok, was the Gosho "Lessening One's Karmic Retribution", which you can find in WND pp199-201, and at

http://www.sgilibrary.org/view.php?page=199

The Discussion Meeting will be held this coming Saturday, 21st March, at the same place and time: 1100-1230. These discussions are always open to any guests or friends. Please feel free to invite anyone to join with us and share their experiences and hear ours.

The Rainbow meeting in Pattaya is taking place on Sunday 22nd March at Soka Gakkai Thailand in soi 5 on Third Road, north Pattaya at 3 pm.

I'll be there at 2.30 for Daimoku if you wish to chant with me. All the best!

I was in attendance for this meeting ( making the jouney to Bkk for that reason alone) and it was a good study with some knowledgeable and inspiring contributions. The main emphasis was on Boddhisattva Never Disparaging - which I had the opportunity to point out at the end that his example of profound respect for all beings is that of the ultimate shakyabuku in acknowledging that everyone has the poterntial for Buddhahood.

It's worth taking the time to read as The Gosho actually also uses his example. It can be found in chapter 20 of the Lotus Sutra

What a shame, it would have been the perfect opportunity to finally meet you, had I had the chance to come to Bangkok on this occasion.

Leelu has just sent me some important supporting points to the Gosho "Lessening One's Karmic Retribution", the study of which I will be sharing with local members this afternoon in Pattaya.

Here they are:

#This Gosho has an empowering teaching

#working for other people's happiness

#break through obstacles by the right attitude

#to open brilliant opportunities for ourselves

#build great inner life force that helps to dispel dark clouds

#gives hope, courage and strength

#bring up our life condition

#to fulfill our mission

#it's our good fortune to have the Gohonzon and the means of changing our karma

#to appreciate the situation we are in

#Even when we are struggling with hardships in life, we help others to challenge and

triumph over their own destinies

#Encountering hardships for the sake of the Law

#Persecutions excellent opportunity to change our destinies

#if we hope to guide people to happiness in the Latter Day of the Law, it is of utmost importance to teach them about their innate power to triumph over suffering

#in Chinese characters this term literally means ''transforming the heavy and receiving it lightly''

#a person could expiate even the heaviest negative karma from past lives through retribution in a lighter form in this present existence

#karma can be transformed as a result of manifesting the Buddhahood inherently

within us

#negative karma erased when we bring forth the life-state of Buddhahood

#Gateway to attaining Buddhahood in this lifetime

#put a stop to the negative cycle of suffering and enter a new positive trajectory of happiness

#TURN POISON INTO MEDICINE

# redirecting our lives toward happiness right at this very moment

#defeating disbelief and slander, conquer darkness in our own lives, manifest life force and erase sufferings accumulated from negative karma

# PROTECT the LAW and defeat ignorance and darkness

#IMPORTANT thing is that one's words and actions are in harmony, in sync.

Hi Ave,

Really sorry I did not reply to you. Yes, Brent did make a full recovery from the appendicitus but, unfortunately, other health problems arose in February 2010 and he is terminally ill now. I am going to visit him for a week between 28 May to 5 June 2011 - in Cha am (I live in the UK). I would love to meet up with any SGI member in the Cha am area to chant. If any read this post, please send a text to my mobile number (I can't read Thai but I will get someone to read it to me if necessary) - 00447832240309. Thank you. Debra
