National Cave Management Policy Committee launches guideline to develop caves nationwide

BANGKOK, 27 April 2019 (NNT) - The National Cave Management Policy Committee has determined three guidelines for creating awareness and participation and supporting the operations for the benefit of natural resources, maintenance, conservation, rehabilitation and development into tourist attractions in the future.

 

The cabinet has approved the appointment of the National Cave Management Policy Committee. Relevant persons and Thai and foreign experts in cave exploration were mobilized to prepare a database by categorizing over 5,000 caves. About 3,000 caves have been clearly defined and most of them is in the North. All caves will be systemized for comprehensive management. The operation is divided into three phases of four years, 10 years and 20 years. Once completed, it will benefit the natural resources. The relevant authorities will also preserve, restore and take care of the caves and prevent them from being destroyed by humans. Some caves will developed for ecotourism to generate income for the community. The cave exploration also helps prevent dangers inside the cave. If a risk point is found, the authorities will prohibit people from entering the area to prevent accidents.

 

Most people and tourists have begun to be more interested in caves after the case of Tham Luang - Khun Nam Nang Non. Therefore, exploring and developing suitable caves into tourist attractions will distribute income to the community and reduce congestion at popular tourist attractions. Importantly, it will also upgrade ecotourism by respecting the rules of that tourist attraction before experiencing the beauty inside the cave.

That really sounds like an oxymoron. If they are to be "developed" the prefix eco surely needs removing.

So you would prefer to see the standard tourism model would you? The one that inevitably destroys the very environment that attracted the travellers in the first place.

 

And there are plenty of examples of that around the world, including right here in Thailand!

Ecotourism.  Is that the current flavour where you get tourists to fly half way round the world , stay in a fully air conditioned hotel, then take a chugging diesel van for two hours to a river where you can then paddle on a bamboo raft ?

 

Spend a few hours in a specially built eco village where they "source" their own food, generate their own electricity and then they all p$iss of back to their own villages in ATV's once the gullible eco tourists have rafted further down the river to be returned to their hotel, where they will all pat themselves on the back for doing their part in saving the world ?

Hmmm given the tourists brown breaded on the roads and sea here I wouldn't be hanging my life on the coat hanger of their assertions that this would be " safely " managed should it ever come to fruition .. And c'mon disappearing into a hole in the ground is not for everyone especially if you have to live on Oreo's , bottled water and inadvertently become part of an Int' rescue effort ..

Well, I don't want to appear contradiary  Geoff, but what you have described here and very well I should add, IS NOT Ecotourism. It is in fact the 'standard tourism model' to which I alluded.

 

These standard tourists have been sold these 'ecofriendly' options usually by a commission hungry tour rep over 'free drinks in the lounge' on arrival and they probably don't give a damn about their impact or otherwise on the environment at all.

 

But I do concur that the term 'Ecotourism' is often misused.

 

Take only photographs, leave only footprints.

 

Have an ecofriendly day.

Thanks for that  so perhaps you could enlighten me as to exactly what would be the details of how, let's say, I could undertake a 2 week ecotourist holiday in Peru whilst currently living in Thailand ?

 

I don't actually believe there is such a thing as an ecotourist holiday. Zero pollution, zero fossil fuel usage, zero damage to the ecology etc etc is impossible to attain for a tourist related activity.

 

Ecotourism is I suggest another gimmick aimed at maximizing profits for just another type of holiday.  But please prove me wrong.

Is there anything the Thais do not have a committee for? What next,the working party to determine the need for a committee to monitor the formation of committees.Is there a committee for the monitoring of Hubs?(which Thailand seems to have a lot of)
