Thai man reports "loan shark friend" to police after assault over interest on 2,000 baht

Two Thai men allegedly beat up a man who owed them 20% interest on a 2,000 baht loan.

Aran Buncheun, 34, had loaned the money to Chayanan Pongphayom, 41, in April.

They were former work colleagues.

When Chayanan didn't send the 20% monthly interest due on May 1st Aran texted him to ask for the money.

An argument developed and then Aran went with Surachai Kaewjitngamkuson, 37, to the car park of the Thepaville Condo in Theparak district of Samut Prakarn. They were armed with knives.

They attacked Chayanan who then reported the matter to police. Samrong Neua police yesterday interviewed the two attackers who had given themselves up.

The cops found out that the pair were not organised loan sharks but they had still offered money at unfair interest rates.

They were charged with this offence and assault.

Smart move, threaten to slice n dice your former friend for 400 baht.

I guess if the penalty is wai n' 500 it is somewhat worth it.

Makes me realise how incredibly lucky I am - 2000 baht sounds such a small some and he couldn’t even make the payments. There but for the grace of God....

What is the punishment for loan sharks in Thailand? It seems they are everywhere and it seems that is a big problem for Thai society. But it seems little is done against them...

It's a lot of money and something I ponder.  Posters regularly state that LOS is no longer a poor country but that's an easy assumption to make when the only indicator is wandering about downtown BKK.

Welcome to hell as that's what it is on a daily basis for your average Thai.

Kneecap the scum they are the misery makers for trifling amounts????

Trifling amount for you but not your average Thai.

Bear in mind that the beneficiary was content to take out the loan, albeit in desperation and on desperate terms.

New school term starts shortly.. fees have to be paid by students.

Many Thais are facing a tough month & take out quick loans to try to make ends meet.
