PM Prayut presides over event on water resources

BANGKOK, 12 June 2019 (NNT) - The Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) has held an event to provide knowledge and communication channels on water resource management during this year’s rainy season. The event was held at the Thai Army Club on Vibhavadi Rangsit road, Bangkok, and was attended by some 40 relevant agencies.

After presiding over the event, the Prime Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, said water resources have not been successfully managed because various units are working separately. The government is aware of its importance and has developed a strategy and a master plan for sustainable water resource management.

Today, the ONWR is the main agency responsible for integrating operations of the different units. The ONWR has reduced the size of flood-prone areas by 7.8 million rai (about 3.08 million acres). More than 4.35 million households have benefited and the public can use four million cubic meters of additional water.

Annual spending on water resource management has been reduced to 18 billion baht, which is four times lower than many years ago. However, the country’s water resources are still not enough to meet all the demands, but the government will do its best to solve the problem.

As for the recent floods in Bangkok, the Prime Minister called on officials to monitor the situation at all times and take responsibility when flooding occurs.

He also asked the people not to link this issue with politics.

At the event, there were demonstrations of tasks carried out by ad hoc centers, and 13 agencies presented their innovative ideas for better water resource management. The event enabled all sectors to understand how water resources are managed during the rainy season.

If they only understood that as Bangkok is built on a river delta flooding will always occur no matter how talk and money is thrown at the problem

Begging not to be held accountable as always.

Many areas of Bangkok flood during normal rain storms due to poor or lack of drainage.

How often do we hear of such government events being held in the Army Club?

Aren't there sufficient government civilian facilities to handle these events? Use of these facilities would naturally be funded by the Thai treasury through an NLA-approved annual government budget.

Understanding that the military can privately operate its own enterprises, it begs the question of whether the military receives private benefit by holding government events at military facilities through the receipt of government funds as compensation.
