The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) will gain over Bt56.4 billion (including VAT) from selling three slots of the 700MHz spectrum to three telecoms operators on Wednesday, of which Bt36 billion will be used by the NBTC’s existing plan of easing the financial burden of the digital TV broadcasting licence holders.

The remainder amount will be passed to the state coffers, the agency said.

Subsidiaries of each of Advanced Info Service (AIS), Total Access Communication (Dtac) and True Corp all purchased each of the 700MHz slots on Wednesday when the watchdog put the slots on sale.

The NBTC wants these operators to provide 5G services on the 700MHz.

Buying the slots means all of them now meet the junta’s condition that if they buy the 700MHz slots, they will be entitled to the right granted by the junta to pay the upfront instalment of their existing 900MHz licences on the longer period than the original four instalments.

The 700MHz licences are valid from October 1 next year or otherwise rescheduled by the NBTC. No matter which date applies, the operators must make their first instalments 15 days beforehand.

As none of them selected the same 700MHz slot on Wednesday, there was no need for them to draw lots to select the targeted slots.

True subsidiary TrueMove H Universal Communication (TUC) selected the pair of 703-713MHz and 758-768MHz.

DTAC subsidiary dtac TriNet selected the pair of 713-723MHz and 768-778MHz.

AIS subsidiary Advanced Wireless Network (AWN) selected the pair of 723-733MHz and 778-788MHz.

The NBTC sold three slots at the 700MHz spectrum at a price of Bt17.6 billion each. Each slot features a 2x10MHz bandwidth. The licence term will be 15 years and payments for the licence is divided into 10 instalments.
