When I was at the Immigration Office last week, I was informed that when I go to Vientiane to get a Non-B visa, I need to bring a notarized copy of my university degree. The visa is based on a teaching position at a university in Thailand. I was told I have to get the copy of my degree notarized at the US Embassy in Bangkok or US Consulate in Chiang Mai. Is this true? I have my original degree and photocopies but nothing is notarized. Do I need to get that done before going to Vientiane, Laos?

Not required for the non-b visa in Vientiane. Immigration is not a great source of info for visas obtained at embassies and consulates.

Are you working for a company or as a teacher at school?

You may need your degree legalized to for a teaching licence. The US embassy does not legalize any document.

See: https://th.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/local-resources-of-u-s-citizens/notaries-public/

You may be able to do a affidavit to self certify your degree if needed. Look under affidavits on that page.

You can ask you Consulate/embassy to apostle your degree.  You take you original to the embsassy and they verify the signature and place a stamp on the back of it.

a legalization of a usa document is a hassle. needs a state then federal apostille and the embassies dont do it.  us state dept

there are agencies that do it for a fee and save the hassle time and flight expenses unless a friend or relative can do it.

https://www.uslegalization.com/ .         but there and many

When I got my non b for teaching from Vientiane last December they did not require my degree to be notorised or legalised . In fact that is why I chose to go there after finding out that KL did require it (they introduced it on their check list at least). I had neither the time or inclination to spend the £200 it was going to cost me to get my original documents sent from Thailand back to London, from the UK government offices to the Thai embassy in London, and then back to Thailand again)
