Police tighten security in Bangkok

BANGKOK: -- Metropolitan police have heightened security in Thailand's capital city of Bangkok on the anniversary of the founding of the Barisan Revolusi Nasional Melayu Pattani (BRN) militant group on Tuesday, although intelligence does not indicate any attack, a senior police officer said Tuesday.

Acting Metropolitan Police Commissioner Pol. Lt-Gen. Adisorn Nonsee said the city's police are well-prepared to provide security in the capital. Although there has been no sign of any irregularity yet, he ordered adjustments of the police security plan.

The revised plan is coordinated with the army's security plan.

The new plans cover more than 3,000 locations in Bangkok. Target areas are divided into three levels -- surveillance areas, special surveillance areas, and very special surveillance areas.

In all the plans, police have set up checkpoints from 10 pm to 5 am.

The police officer said the public shouldn't panic as no intelligence indicates a possible attack. However, he said, the police are not careless and have tightened security to prevent an incident.

Gen. Adisorn inspected operational readiness of the police force under Metropolitan Police Division 1 and their arms in providing security for Bangkokians on Tuesday.

He also viewed a demonstration of the Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T) unit. The police conducted a drill to ensure effective and rapid response in case of any untoward incident.
