Former snooker star faces Thai drugs jail

IN 1987 'Flash' Bob Harris came within one match of reaching the snooker World Championship at the Crucible after a spectacular run in the qualifiers.

But 17 years later he is facing a lengthy spell in a Thai jail if convicted of serious drug charges.

Former Fratton resident Harris moved to Thailand in 1993.

Earlier this year Harris, 48, and his 23-year-old girlfriend Khun Jarunan were arrested at his home in Pattaya for drug offences.

Undercover officers paid about £55 for three packets of cannabis. Police then stormed his house, arrested the pair, and a search uncovered a further 34 packets of the drug.

Harris, who is also wanted for questioning by police in Hampshire over a blackmail conspiracy, was taken to Pattaya Police Station and charged with possessing and supplying an illegal drug.

He was also charged with residing in the country without a visa, because his ran out in August last year.

Serious drug offences are punishable by death in Thailand though foreigners usually have this sentence commuted or he could be deported back to Britain.

But Harris will deny the charges and claims he is the victim of a police set up.
