BANGKOK (NNT) - Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) between Thailand and 17 partner countries have helped international trade value in the first half of this year to reach 140 billion U.S. Dollar, with ASEAN remaining the top trading partner with the highest trade amount with Thailand.

The Department of Trade Negotiations Director General Auramon Supthaweethum, has revealed that trade figures between Thailand and 17 FTA partners, show that overall trade in the first half of 2019 under FTAs, reached 142.97 billion U.S. dollar, 70.16 billion of which is the export figure, and 72.81 of which is the import figure.

ASEAN remains the top partner with the highest level of trade at 53.56 billion USD, with vehicles and car parts, processed oils, chemicals, jewellery and accessories, and plastic beads being the main export products from Thailand.

China ranks number two with 37.85 billion USD trade value. Plastic beads, rubber products, chemicals; fresh, chilled, frozen, and dried fruit; and computers and parts are the main export products from Thailand.

Plastic beads are a good seller !!

One gets the impression from this story Thailand 's exports are booming. Nothing to worry about then; those reports that exports are in decline must be false news.

Vietnam now has a Free Trade Agreement with the EU. Why doesn't Thailand have one? FTA talks between the EU and Thailand were abandon after the 2014 coup.

The process to first discussion with EU about FTA has began last month, we will see the result.

Judging from the statement by Thai trade delegates below, the FTA will be quite a while away.

The EU will collapse one day, communism don’t last long, the Soviet Union collapsed in the 90s.

when you take democracy and freedom  away from people they get fed up.

They did not mention elastic as an export item, Thai official have plenty of it and could export some. With the TOT using big amounts in their forecasts, budgets and results along with all other Gov authorities.

Should be interesting to see how Thai exports do in the months ahead.  With an overpriced Baht, will the government step in to help exporters?  Better idea, drop the Baht (devalue, cut more interest rates, limit or eliminate the hot money foreign inflows).

Just wait until Thailand begins exporting its recycled plastic straw-filled pillows.

Export value will explode!

I'm hoping Thailand will have a free trade agreement with the UK once Brexit is out the way...I want to buy a new Mini...at present, it'll cost me £54k from Bangkok Mini...only 26k in UK.

My reading of it is the EU has not been impressed with Thailand's human rights record, particularly in the fishing industry. Fortunately for Thailand the EU has lifted Thailand's "yellow card" which has been in place since 2015.

But this has been met with misgivings and even strong resistance from some employment and human rights organisations who claim that human trafficking is still rampant.

The onus of proof seems to be in Thailand's court and this could be a handicap to Thailand's quest for an FTA.

EU was also not pleased that the junta government didn't invite their observation team for the election.

Strictly a guess but I think this might mean “pellets” as used in manufacturing of various products.

Perhaps a transliteration issue.

Which will be much lower in the second half considering the Baht !

Don't knock it. At one time if you had a big enough box you could marry the chief's 4 daughters.

And this doesn't apply to Thailand aha? Or China, or Vietnam, Or ASIA in general?

Whats the difference between European countries and let's say the USA?
Right there's none.

Both governments charge taxes. Both offer services in return.

Difference being that we spend less on military, more on health care and co.

Both systems are absolutely identical, Denmark and co have a freer market than the USA.

You wan't to talk about freedom? Try drinking a beer on a US beach without ending up in jail.

https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2019-07-23/the-choice-isn-t-between-capitalism-or-socialism good article about this.

It's all just BS rhetoric, all western countries are running the same system. Just lame ass excuses and fear mongering by politicans and  co.

The Thai economy IS booming - that must be why the banks are reducing their liability !!
