Renewed calls for stricter control of illegal fishing equipment

A network of fishermen’s groups, in Thailand’s southern province of Trang, has renewed its call for authorities to control the use of illegal fishing equipment more strictly, in light of the death on Thursday of baby dugong ‘Yamil’ which brought the dugong unnatural death toll this year to 17.

The fishermen’s network claimed that they had already proposed measures to protect dugongs in the seas off Trang province to the provincial fisheries committee on August 2, but there has not been any response from officials concerned.

“It is high time that serious and effective action is taken,” said a representative of the fishermen’s network, in a message intended for Trang’s provincial governor.

But are the  Officials the ones  who are  killing the  dugongs? If the  fishermen have the solution  why  can't they implement  them  themselves?

Or does their solution have some financial incentive to  be  sought after?

I used to spend months each year island hopping. You'd not believe the <deleted> floating in the sea. Nets strewn on ocean floors and reefs.

It's an absolute international crime Thailand still uses trawl nets.

Fisherman literally use the open waters as a trash can.

This will never change until fisherman have a stake in life and a future. No different than poor people anywhere.

They are protected animals, may involve protected areas but I agree - why not just get in with your grand plans?
