Siem Reap, Six airport bag handlers held over theft

Featured Replies

Siem Reap provincial police have arrested six Cambodia Airports baggage handlers who allegedly broke open passengers’ luggage and stole their belongings at Siem Reap International Airport. Colonel Hang Sophat Phearom, chief of the provincial police minor crimes bureau, yesterday identified them as Sok Sokhorn, 40; Sovann Virak, 32; Run Ra, 37; Dul Sovann, 31; Rith Sarai, 29; and Eng Phai, 39, all living in the province.

He said they were arrested following complaints from the airport’s security unit and police are looking for other accomplices. Col Phearom noted that all six were sent to the provincial court yesterday for further questioning.

“Five suspects were arrested on Tuesday and another one was arrested on Wednesday,” he said. “Police are currently continuing to search for the remaining perpetrators, but we have not yet identified them.” Col Phearum said that during their interrogations the suspects confessed to the thefts and said they had broken into bags up to 100 times.
