BANGKOK (NNT) - "Out of the Blue", a short film produced by Saha Phu Wiang Dern Film, has won an award in the ’depression’ category. The film will be promoted to help people of all ages understand and treat patients with depression correctly.

"Out of the Blue" won the award at the short film competition organized by Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry. The competition was part of the "130th Anniversary of the Red Roof" project. The runner up went to "Left", and A Thirsty film. Six awards of distinction and one honorable mention were granted at this competition.

The President of Somdet Chaopraya Hospital Foundation under the Royal Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, Lady Auepranee Chiaravanond, said the problem of depression is that most people with depression are not aware that they have the disorder and they don’t know the correct way to treat it. They avoid meeting doctors. The short film competition was initiated by Somdet Chaopraya Hospital Foundation under the Royal Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The foundation promotes short films that are easy to understand in order for the general audience and the patients with depression to understand that it can be treated. The Department of Mental Health will consider the nine selected films before promoting them to the people, so that they understand and treat patients with depression correctly.

A study on mental health problems in Thailand conducted by the Department of Mental Health shows that about 1.5 million Thai people over the age of 15, suffer from depression. More women than men are diagnosed with depression by 1.7 times. The risk of suicide for patients whose depression goes untreated is as high as 20%.
