Advice on Wife Getting Thai Residency + Thai Passport

Featured Replies

Hello,

I've seen some similar posts but no definite answers were provided.  I appreciate any advice!  My wife and I are both born in America.  My wife has a Thai Birth Certificate but never got added to a House Registration document, thus doesn't really exist.  We're leaving to Thailand for a few months at the end of the year on Tourist Visa, with the aim of getting her registered for a Thai ID card, and then a passport.  If we take her Thai Birth certificate with us, is this enough evidence of her being Thai to register her?  She still has extended family in Thailand whose address we hope to register with.

We went to a Thai Consulate here in America, and the answer was basically there's less questions asked in Thailand, or the procedures "may" be different.  We don't want to get her parents involved unless we absolutely have to.

Thanks again for your help.

She should apply for a Thai passport in the US. That way she doesn't need a visa. The passport should even be easier to get in the US as the consulate should be familiar with a Thai not being registered in a tabien baan.

Proof might be required to show that she is the person mentioned on the birth certificate. Which could mean another Thai family member vouching for her.

Normally, when born in Thailand the parents take the birth certificate from the hospital to the local district office, Amphoe. They register the baby and she/he will end up in the (now blue) housebook.

I know that many parents for strange reasons didn't register babies, don't have a clue why. You can register later, but I don't know if there's any time limit. But, I do think you have to go to the Amphoe where your wife was born. The birth certificate says which hospital, city and province.

The OP specifically said they were both born in America (assuming he meant the the US), so good chance the birth certificate didn't come from a Thai hospital. It's all a bit confusing. Born in the US but has a Thai birth certificate...how does that work?

Maybe she's got Thai parents? ????

Yes, I understand that.

So you get a Thai birth certificate in the US as well as being a US citizen if born to Thai parents in the US? You don't get a US birth certificate? Or do you get both?

Bit confusing for a dumb Aussie I'm afraid.

If that's the way it works then the OP should be able to sort it out without too many hassles.

You get both, if your parents register you with the Thai embassy or consulate as well. It means she is already registered with the Thai government and has been confirmed as being a Thai national. Now she only needs to get a Thai passport.

Thank you.  So she gets a real live Thai birth certificate in the USA as the op states.  I can understand being recognised as a national or citizen...but a dual birth certificate is not something I'm familiar with

I don't know anywhere else in the world that happens. Usually you get one and only one birth certificate.
