County film maker dies during Thai holiday

A 46-year-old Shropshire man has died while on holiday in Thailand, the Foreign Office said today.

John Stephen Morris, who lived in Shrewsbury, died last month in Bangkok.

Foreign and Commonwealth office officials today confirmed that Mr Morris, who was a film maker, had drowned while he was in the country.

Officials also confirmed that Mr Morris had died on May 12 and that his family had been informed of his death.

It is not known how long Mr Morris, who lived in the Bicton area of the town, had been on holiday in Thailand.

His body has since been flown back to the United Kingdom from the Far East and the funeral will take place at Holy Trinity Church, in Bicton, tomorrow at 2pm.

Coroner for mid and north Shropshire Mr John Ellery opened an inquest on Thursday which has been adjourned to a date to be fixed.

The hearing was adjourned while officials await the results of a post mortem which was carried out in Thailand.

Jo Lamb, a spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, said today: "We can confirm a British national by the name of John Morris did die in Thailand on May 12.

"His next of kin have been made aware and our staff have provided assistance to the family.

"We can confirm he did drown," she added.

Members of Mr Morris's family did not want to comment today and no one at the British Embassy in Bangkok was available for any comment.

what was the verdict of the inquest in this matter? Sounds like some 'funny business'...

easy enough for a tourist to get into trouble in BKK and stripped of his goods and Gucci loafers but drownding sounds fishy to me...no further info from the local cops? Never saw any report in the BKK Post.

I am getting a bit upset about your comments.

Please show piety and respect the people who drift too far outside in the pools.

I say, we don't know the background info, but godriddance, this guy is dead.

RIP

axel...you misunderstand me...the man's death appears to be a mystery. Normally when a falang tourist dies in Thailand it is news worthy and shows up in the english language press. This incident did not. The cops normally like to get involved to display to the world that 'they care'. In this instance they did not. So...what's going on here?

And...I am not glib and uncaring; I offered sincere condolences to the dead man's family on this thread before pursuing this matter.

By the way 'good riddance' is a term in English normally used to describe one's feelings when someone that you don't like is dispatched by whatever means.

Axel...DID YOU KILL JOHN STEPHEN MORRIS???

There are a million and one ways to drown in Thailand, just like in any other country.

There is nothing to suggest any funny business - why jump on that bandwagon. Could be anything, but nothing in this article suggest anything other than 'he drowned'.

Plenty of tourists mess about on the river and canals - one of the most popular toursit attractions is a boat trip.

ah ha!...oxfordwill offers an apologia for the simple and unexplained drowning theory in an obvious attempt to dismiss the matter. I say bullsh1t...I wanna look at the police report when the man was pulled out of the water. I want khunying Porntip to take up the forensic side of the issue...

anything less is to muddle the issue and encourage wanton attacks on tourists everywhere...
