International Customs

Featured Replies

When I did my first tour in Afghanistan I noticed that women there walked five paces behind their men. Many of the International Correspondents commented on this custom as an expample of how repressed women were in the country.

When I went back for the second tour a couple of years later I noticed that the custom had changed and the women were now five paces in front. Somewhat surprised by this I asked my translater why the sudden change and did the the comments of the International Press Corp have such power to do this in such a conservative Muslim country. He smiled, shook his head and explained it to me in one word.

I first heard this story way back in WWII. It was then the Arabs in North Africa, after the Afrika Korps was defeated and the British advanced into Libya and Algeria.

I'm not that old, but I heard it in 1966 when I was in Vietnam. Was about the Vietnamese farmer and his wife then.

My grandfather told me that joke many years ago about France in WW1 - I was just trying to keep it contempory. I think he heard it from his grandfather about the Roman Legionaires in Egypt. I am guessing it will be posted on TV in fifty years time as Martians on Alpha Centuri :o

thankyou for this r3pos7.
