Deputy Prime Minister for economic affairs Somkid Jatusripitak said on Monday (September 30) that the government is considering expanding the 10-million participants limit in the “Eat, Shop, Spend” scheme as the campaign has earned an overwhelming response. The Finance Ministry will also look into the possibility of boosting the Bt19-billion budget.

“Interest in this project is widespread and we were asked to extend the campaign,” Somkid said.

Kobsak Pootrakool, deputy secretary-general to the prime minister, said he has called on agencies who monitor the economy to write a summary report on the current economic state, which will be presented to the Cabinet on October 7.

“When we first proposed the project, we expected all economic stimulus packages to help boost the GDP by 0.3 to 0.5 per cent, helping the growth rate to hit 3 per cent. However, we found the economy worsening and we are looking for measures to solve this problem,” Kobsak said.

Poor old Somkid is losing it; he doesn't seem to keep up with the news. Only yesterday we had the report that the computer system of the KTB running the scheme collapsed due to a lack of readiness and couldn't cope with the the numbers.

But like everything the government does it puts the cart in front of the horse and heads off into the unknown regardless of whether the infrastructure support is functional or not. Will they never learn?

Is he trying to insinuate that 16% of the entire Thai population enrolled in this scheme?

That would be one of the greatest marketing campaigns in the history of the world.

If the UK Labour party gave me £20 , I'd still not vote for them ! Nothing to do with the economy, its a bribe

He could be right.

16% might enrol but only 6% might be bona fide travellers with the other 10% being scammers. No flies on the Thais when free money is being handed out. If there's a way to find a chink in the system they will find it and get their hands on some of it.

Another harebrained scheme by the Thai government.

I think he ought to look into the overwhelming mess in implementing the previous scheme before considering to expand another mess.
