Yuttana Yimgarund, director-general of the Treasury Department

The Treasury Department is aiming to enter into rental contracts with 100,000 squatters who have been occupying 1 million rai of government-owned land since before October 4.

The project, which is in line with the Thai government’s apolicy to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, is scheduled for completion during the 2019/20 fiscal year.

The Treasury’s Pracharath scheme is designed to help people have a legal place to both live and work.

The rental will be set at Bt200 per rai per year for the land plots used for cultivation and Bt0.25 a square wah per month for plots on which they live, Yuttana Yimgarund, director-general of the department, said.

Isn't the entire point of squatting that you do NOT have to pay rent or a lease? Am I missing something, perhaps?

And how is this measure, i.e. taking money from those who have none or very little, supposed to help "bridge the gap between the rich and the poor"?

The only point I see is that the soon-to-be-tenants can have a legal residential address, without which they'd be unable to access many government services.

and the government will not be able to kick them off the land during the rental term (unlike the case for squatters, unless they can argue adverse possession before a court).  seems to be a reasonable response by the government.  hope they kick up the rental significantly after the first year though to encourage the squatters to make good of this generous offer.

Good point. Thanks.

I wouldn't say squatters are poor.

The businesses set up on government land Beach side have prosperous businesses, some making huge amounts of money.

I see a lot of foreigner owned businesses (husband/wife) located Na Jomtien, also walking street agogo bars are squatting.

At 200 baht Rai a year I would take 200. Where do my wife sign?

Does it not show  once more again that it seems Thai government is in need of money …. even with an overflow of foreign exchange money and super strong baht ..? Or maybe they don't wish to "touch" that treasure box ….

which government isn't in need of money?  maybe not norway or germany so much, but most are running budget deficits.

foreign exchange money, or FDI, doesn't simply go to the government coffers, free of charge or otherwise.

Most Squatters  don't have any money so when and how would they be able to pay the '' Rent'' if they don't pay are they going to be kicked out or just have a legal  Squatters place?  sounds pretty insane to me .

in the meantime, farang contributing a lot still have no rights to buy 1 m

Surely the rich charging the poor will widen this gap?
