U.S. Secretary of State calls for EU to condemn Iran over tanker

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday called on the European Union to condemn Iran and hold Tehran accountable after he said oil from Iranian tanker Adrian Darya had been offloaded in Syria.

"Oil from the #AdrianDarya1 has been offloaded in Syria, proving that Iran lied to the UK and Gibraltar ... EU members should condemn this action, uphold the rule of law, and hold Iran accountable," Pompeo wrote in a post on Twitter.

The United Kingdom seized the tanker in July off the coast of Gibraltar in July. After authorities received formal written assurances from Tehran that the ship would not discharge 2.1 million barrels of oil from Syria, the vessel was released.

But in September, Britain's foreign minister said the tanker had sold its crude oil to the Assad regime in Syria, breaking those assurances.

Don’t think the allies in EU has much respect for the Secretary of State Pompeo. That’s the toxicity that will be generated with his undying loyalty to Trump. He must read the book “Everything Trump touch dies”.

Good luck.

Doubt anyone will return pompeo's calls.

Maybe get Vlad on the horn?

Not the point. The point is Iran lied, repeatedly to the EU.

The EU cannot ignore that and expect to be treated seriously.

Where is the evidence for that ...?

Talk is cheap ...

The problem is that Pompeo accusation is shrouded with ambiguity whether this was an old accusation back in September or a fresh case. He is like his boss making unclear impulsive accusation which mystified the allies. Which is reason his EU allies are ignoring him. A bit like the boy who cried wolf,

No, the point is that the EU members know that the Trump Administration has pushed Iran into taking all sorts of desperate measures. So to condemn Iran would be seen as supporting Trump. Why should the Europeans do him any favors?

I suspect MANY of the U.S. allies are going to start turning their backs.

I was hoping that when the Uk agreed to release the tanker iran would release  Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, thats what i would have pushed for

So what. Trump lies at least 10 times a day AND he expects to be taken seriously too.

Of course the EU can ignore Trump because he is only ranting as usual.

The Saudis got away with a heinous murder....so Iran's oil offload seems peanuts when compared.

Why not , Trump does ?

Trump has spent 33 months destroying long established relationships with US allies. He pulled out of the treaty with Iran, without any alternative in mind. That was sheer recklessness. Now, Pompeo goes to Europe like a poor beggar with his hands extended, looking for help.

Hopefully, the EU will say get lost. You are not needed, you are not wanted here and your policies are not useful or even modestly intelligent.

Never mind Iran giving Syria oil the E.U. needs to condemn the United States for abandoning the Kurds to Turkey. All those foreign ISIS fighters were given free passage from Turkey to Syria. So what happens when Turkey take over the ISIS prison camps? Do those Muslim nuts go free? What is Trump really up to and for whose benefit? Trump may not have entered office super rich but I think he will be by the time he leaves.
