Govt to set up new SRT board to proceed with airport rail-links contract

BANGKOK (NNT) - The high speed rail connection project between Don Muang, Suvarnabhumi, and U-Tapao airports is facing a major obstacle after the State Railway of Thailand’s (SRT) entire executive board members resigned, preventing the signing of the land confiscation contract to proceed according to schedule, on 15th October.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul, who is supervising the Ministry of Transport, has disclosed that the resignation of all SRT board members on 1st October, annuls the planned contract signing on 15th October.

He said a new SRT board needs to be set up urgently to proceed with project contracting, to comply with the 7th November deadline, on which date the contract must already have been signed.

"It is difficult now for 15th October after the SRT board resignation. They, the former board members, are now responsible for any consequences after this. Thus, I have to urgently inform the Prime Minister that he now has to appoint new SRT board members who will sign the contract and inform the Cabinet, as all processes must be done by 7th November."

The Minister of Transport Saksayam Chidchob, said today after his discussion with Mr Anutin and the contractor-selection committee for the airports railway project, that the Ministry of Transport has nominated new members of the SRT board to the State Enterprise Policy Office for verification, after which the Ministry of Transport will receive the results and then forward the list to the Cabinet for final approval, which should take place next week.

He said the new SRT board members will pursue the signing of project contracts with CP, the winning contractor, this month.

Can one ask why the board members resigned?

What could possibly go wrong

This is turning into a real shambles, but comes as no surprise see the SRT is involved.

From what I read it was a political move and the minister wanted the Board replaced and forced them out.

Out with the old SRT dullards and in with the new. He might have been influenced with the ongoing stuff up with Hopewell. Or he might see it as job opportunities for family and close friends.

In the meantime the issue of the contract signing for the new HS rail system and the acquisition of necessary land has turned into a shambles, but that shouldn't come as any surprise. Ministerial and administrative ineptitude always rules the day.

Maybe the word "confiscation" put a shiver up their spine.

Me thinks another attempt for the old and new committee members to skim off taxpayers money and from the already debt ridden (actually bankrupt) SRT.

And then always this term high-speed rail? What is high speed? Compared to the current average speed of Thai railway or what?

If they're talking about bullet trains aka TGV, Shinkansen or Chinese counterparts. It'll never be economically or make sense otherwise for this project and Thailand in general. Ticket prices will be astronomically high. The distance between the stations too short to justify a high speed track.

If they're talking about a modern dual track system with design speed of 160km/h, then I'll say go ahead. Useful for the people and infrastructure of this country.

You cannot make this stuff up, not if they consider this is the correct way forward but people who will sign the contract typical military way of thinking...!!!!

This way of thinking so deeply ingrained here it will take centuries to transform it to a modern society and economy.

Meanwhile the neighbouring countries will have overtaken Thailand with ease.

Alarm bells went off in my head when I heard they had all resigned.  What is it they know and cannot talk about?  Sure confiscating property is unpleasant, but they can tell themselves it's for the greater good.....not enough to resign over Enmass.
