I think I read on this forum a long time ago that there is a Thai consulate in Suwanakhet, Laos - just across the river from Mukdahan.

Does anyone know anything about (or have experience of using) this consulate.

Specifically, do they issue tourist visas.

And is it true that visa applications can be submitted early in the morning and then collected later the same day?

Any help appreciated.

It was spelled Savannakhet when I lived there and I'm not about to change. But they no longer return passport with visa until the next workday. With the new visa rules it became just impossible to process on a same day basis.

Do a search on this as there was a previous post that detailed the entire routine getting there by bus etc. Yes you can get a tourist visa and if you drop it off before 11:30 you can pick it up the next day after 2pm. The problem with that is the bus back to Mukdahan (45 bhat) leaves at 2pm - and you cant get from the consulate to the bus station in time. So plan to catch the 3:30 bus.

Plenty of guest houses in town but they are noisy. The Consulate is on the road facing the Mekong river a few blocks North of the little restaurants on the river.
