The participants included the adviser to the Prime Minister’s Office Nattachai Sriroongsukpinij as the PM’s representative and Ongart Klampaiboon on behalf of the House of Representatives’ speaker. Thammasat University vice-rector for Sustainability and Administration Prinya Thaewanarumitkul also attended the event. There were ritual ceremonies from three religions, including wreath-laying and merit-making ceremonies for all who lost their lives on October 14, 1973. Then associate professor Kittisak Prokati gave a speech on the “Rule of Law and Legal State under Thailand’s Democracy”. webfact Posted October 14, 2019 Author Share Posted October 14, 2019 People remember 46 years after October 14 massacre BANGKOK(NNT) - At the October 14 Memorial Day ceremony observing the 46th year since the tragedy in 1973, the general public and relatives of the victims have attended religious ceremonies to commemorate all the lives lost in the tragedy. Delegates from many organizations have also laid wreaths in memory of those lost. At the October 14 Memorial Ceremony, held at the October 14 Memorial in Bangkok today, a multi-faith religious service repesenting Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam took place to commemorate the political tragedy of October 14 1973, when students and the people came out to demand democracy during the dictatorship of Gen Thanom Kittikachorn, leading to violent suppression resulting in many injuries and deaths. A representative of the Prime Minister delivered a speech praising the heroism of those who lost their lives on October 14 1973, which even after 46 years, is still one of the most important political incidents in Thai history, reflecting the power of students and the people who regard democratic values as essential to advancing Thai society, in keeping with international communities. The incident gave birth to public participation in politics, which remains the important foundation on which Democracy is built.
