BANGKOK(NNT) - As a result of community based efforts to help promote sustainable tourism, participating model communities have grown in revenue by 20 percent, which is expected to help the country achieve its tourism revenue goals this year.

At the opening ceremony of the DASTA Forum 2019, the Minister of Tourism and Sports, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn delivered his remarks that the tourism sector plays a key role in the Thai economy and society, as shown in a 2019 survey by the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA), where communities identified by DASTA received 20.14 percent more revenue.

The increase in tourism activity however causes concerns over sustainability. With this challenge, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports has ordered the DASTA to develop quality tourism attractions by creating development models of sustainability, including community based tourism attractions, in compliance with the sustainability guidelines.

The DASTA will be working with other agencies to promote safety, greenness, fairness, and sustainability to help local communities generate more revenue and achieve an 0.315 average Gini coefficient score, which is higher than the national score, as a benchmark for wealth distribution.

At the event, DASTA granted DASTA Awards to 70 excellent communities for community based tourism, serving as models of development for other communities across the country. The forum also included seminars on sustainable tourism’s economic growth, and success stories on how community based tourism can help reduce inequalities, addressed by a panel of experts and community leaders, aiming to advance Thailand’s tourism industry to the top of global competition.
