ROME (์NNT) -The Committee on World Food Security (CFS) concluded its 46th session on 18th October, with a unanimous agreement to appoint a Thai representative as the new CFS chairperson.

Mr Thanawat Tiensin, who served as the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Thailand to the Rome-based U.N. agency, has been appointed the new CFS chairperson replacing Mr Mario Arvelo from the Dominican Republic. Mr Thanawat’s term is for two years, from 18th October 2019 to 18th October 2021.

The Committee on World Food Security plays a role in making policy-level suggestions on food security and nutrition, allowing all stakeholders to discuss inclusively in all respects, before deciding to endorse global policies adopted by related agencies. These polices affect the food chain represented by farmers, private companies, food processors, and consumers.

Each CFS session serves as an international platform for its 194 member states and stakeholders such as government agencies, international organizations, private companies, civil society organizations, farmer associations, and consumer representatives, to work together on global food security and nutrition. The CFS reports to the UN General Assembly via the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Conference.

Mr Thanawat received unanimous votes from the Permanent Representatives from Asia, North America, Near East, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Pacific, Europe and European Union, and G77 & China, to preside as the next CFS chairperson.

The appointment of a Thai representative as CFS chair represents the role of Thailand in the global community, and provides opportunities for Thailand to promote cooperation in agriculture and food production with all partners.
