Driving to Bangkok from Southern Thailand - best road into Bangkok?

Featured Replies

If I am not wrong the only choice into Bangkok is along Rama2 after the Ratchaburi turn off from the south with another 100km eastwards into Bangkok along Rama 2?

I have never used highway#4 for more than 10 years as traffic was horrible on that east of Ratchaburi into Bangkok. So its Rama 2 even now or is highway# 4 now preferable? If I am not wrong there is no other road into Bangkok, which seems unbelievable for the entire country south of the capital?

At the moment Rama 2 has been an abortion with road constuctions seemingly never ending west of the outer ringroad with traffic jams lasting forever. It's been awful for years now.

I think at present although it has a short stretch of roadworks that Rama II is the lesser of two weevils. Where you turn off depends on where you are going. Highway 4 is the worst road in Bangkok?

Rama 2 at the moment is horrible (has been for decades to be honest). I haven't tried this, i suffered the Rama 2 roadworks, but you could go across from Route 2 to Route 4 using the 3091. But if you are going east to Bangna then you'll  have to face the roadworks.

If you don't need the car in town, "Let the train take the strain..." ????

Go through Ratchaburi and Nakhon Pathom, then just after Nakhon Chaisi turn left to Pinklao. If you then need to get back over to Rama 2 there is a slip road and bridge to Bang Wa. If you want to go elsewhere in Bangkok you can join the expressway before Pinklao.

Let Google maps select the best route.. Always works well for me..

nice "Master and Commander" reference. ????

If you're going into or east of BKK then follow alarchase's advice.

If you're going west of BKK or passing through to the north the cut over towards Kanchanaburi (not all the way of course) but there's a truck bypass route that avoids most traffic and construction and will bring you around back up to outer ring road area. Have to google it as I haven't made that trip in awhile.
