Duties and taxes payable on household items imported into Thailand

Featured Replies

Hi to you all. I have been reading many of the posts here and they are a wealth of knowledge. I will soon be immigrating to Thailand and marrying my Thai fiancee. I therefore have the option of either a retirement visa, as I am over 50, or a marriage visa. My question is, when I move my furniture, tools and household items to Thailand what duty, taxes and vat do I have to pay.

I have been told that as long as the items are over 6 months old there is no duty.

Can someone please confirm if this is correct ?

Which visa is best, I believe that it is possible to apply for a work visa if you have a marriage visa. I have purchased a farm in Surin, near the wife's family land so did not really intend to work off the land but the option could be beneficial.

Thanks in advance for your advice

when I moved here I had a lot of items shipped over and they all cleared no worries with nothing extra to pay although customs did help themselves to some of my items

There is no hard and fast rule and the customs web site is pure fantasy and anything you read there only applies to Thais returning from overseas assignments.  There is NO allowance for foreigners retiring in Thailand

How much or how little duty you pay for imported house hold goods is dependent upon the luck of the draw in which Royal Thai Custom inspector assigned to your shipment AND the ability of your shipping agent's to deal with Customs

Plan for the worst then hope that you are lucky.  Many pay nothing and many pay a lot, depends upon the luck of the draw

Thanks for your help, I realise that in Thailand it changes by the hour.
