You do not say what you were told. If you were told can apply at any immigration office for a 30 day extension you were correctly advised.

Inside Thailand, you can get a 30-day extension of stay at any Immigration office. Cost: 1,900 Baht.

Outside Thailand, you can apply for a new tourist at any Thai consulate.
