Dutch national jailed over drugs

Featured Replies

Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday sentenced a Dutch national to two years in jail, but suspended a year, for distributing 3.19 grammes of drugs in Chamakamon district in May. Judge Thvam Bunnarith identified him as Harry Peelen, 49, a tourist and said he was charged with drug use and distribution under articles 42 and 45 of Cambodian Law on Control of Drug.

He noted that Peelan was arrested on May 25 by anti-drug trafficking police from the Interior Ministry at his rental house in Chamkarmon district. “The court has decided to convict and sentence him to two years but the term of his sentence shall be reduced to only a year in prison,” Judge Bunnarith said. “The rest of his punishment shall be completely suspended.”

He noted that the convict supplied drugs to foreigners staying in the capital. Judge Bunnarith said that Peelan was arrested at about 6 pm on May 25 after police raided his rental house in the district’s Tuol Tumpoung II commune.
