Domestic violence cases were the most widely reported to it, the Pavena Foundation for Children and Women said on Wednesday (December 25).

The Foundation said 7,533 people had filed complaints from January 2 to December 20. Cases of domestic violence topped the list with 2,302 cases, or about 30.60 per cent; there were 1,039 abuse and detention cases, or 13.81 per cent; while there were 777 rape and molestation cases, or 10.33 per cent of the total.

Foundation chairman Pavena Hongsakul said that husbands topped the list of domestic abusers with 485 cases, or 46.68 per cent; there were 115 cases of abuse by relatives, or 11.07 per cent; parents were reported in 107 cases, or 10.30 per cent. Among molesters, neighbours or acquaintances had 319 cases, or 41.06 per cent; friends had 142 cases, or 18.28 per cent; relatives had 89 cases, or 11.45 per cent; stepfathers had 72 cases, or 9.27 per cent; and grandfathers had 21 cases, or 3.47 per cent.

This year, the youngest victims were two three-year-old girls -- one was raped in the school van by the driver and another was molested using a broom handle. The oldest victim was 72 years old, who was raped by a younger neighbour.

Regarding human trafficking, both domestic and international, the foundation said it sees more serious action from the government which has led to the problem becoming less severe. However, some people are still lured with offers of “easy” jobs but are instead forced into prostitution. “There is no such thing as an easy job. When working illegally as a prostitute, they will feel like living in hell,” she said.

There were 56 cases of victims who were lured by a fake agency, up 5.66 per cent from the previous year’s 53 cases.

“This morning [December 25], I met 25 victims who were lured to work in England and New Zealand. They paid Bt50,000 to Bt60,000 for registration but there has been no response from the agency, which is suspected to be a case of fraud. We are helping in the case,” Pavena revealed.

She urged the government to speed up action on the proposed solutions: open a care centre for small children; a full-circle addiction rehabilitation centre; seek strong measures for the problem of abandoned pregnant problem, which is becoming more serious every day. She urged deduction from the salaries of men refusing to take responsibility or create a prenatal legal force.

Interesting stats. Can they break them down into Farang and Thai offenders?

I bet this is 1/10th of these types of crime reported.

I guarantee so many of these crimes go unreported here.

Maybe even more,i know of a few cases where nothing happened.

A girl i know got raped but she did not even bother to report it,according to her

going to the police does not help.

The guy who did it did got shot about six months later, maybe there is a karma thing?

I saw a guy beating up his wife in the street, nobody intervened.

and more than 2,300 times 500 and wais

As usual these types of cases are far under reported.

Be aware of relatives and "friends"

An appalling indictment of LOS' macho culture and tradition of patriarchy. Having said that, one wonders how many Thai men and boys are victims of domestic abuse by wives, partners and relatives.

The fact that a Bangkok hospital specialises in re-attaching penises indicates that it is not all one-way traffic. However, as far as  know there are no refuges for abused males or much interest in addressing the problem.

Interestingly, a recent survey in my own homeland revealed that more than seven hundred thousand British males had experienced domestic abuse in 2016 to 2017, compared with 1.2 million females.

Be interesting to know how LOS compares. Generally, men tend to be less likely than women to report domestic violence - that old "losing face" thing again - and many go on suffering in silence.

So 20'000+ incidents - officially at least - never happened?

Maybe that should read,  per month for 2019.
