Thai man denies giving wife's cancer donation money to a prostitute - but he has drunk some!

Sanook reporters followed up on a story that began by pulling at the heartstrings of Thai netizens but then took a decidedly different turn. 

 

In fact it may soon be deemed the "Drama of the Week"....

 

It began when a poor Thai man took his cancer stricken wife to hospital on a plow and while she was inside set up a tent in the car park. When the story hit social media nearly 100,000 baht of donations flooded in.

 

However, the story took a twist when the man was allegedly filmed not staying in the tent but in a hotel room nearby - and he had the company of a prostitute. 

 

The Sanook team found Sompong, 44, still drunk on a mat next to his plow in the car park of the Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital. He said he was dirt poor and his wife was having radiation treatment inside the hospital on the government's 30 baht gold card health scheme.

 

He said he can't go home.

 

He said that his wife was admitted on the 30th of December. On the 7th of January a foundation rescue worker came to see him in the car park and took his wife's bank details at Krung Thai. In next to no time 90,000 baht had flooded in. 

 

Asked about the woman he was seen with he had a ready explanation. 

 

He was finding it hard sleeping in the tent so he went to a hotel room to get some shuteye. It cost him 300 baht. But he slept there alone, he claimed. 

 

The woman had tried to persuade him to sleep with her but he felt sorry for his wife and turned down her advances. The ATM card and bankbook were with his wife - he just took a bit of money for himself to get by. 

 

"It's all for the wife", he said. He admitted, however, that he did like the occasional drink, but never by the bottle.

 

Meanwhile despite the clip featuring the prostitute there was still a steady stream of people donating. 

 

Panom, 33, said he pitied the man so put some of his own money in an envelope. If the story about the woman was true then that would make him feel sad. 

 

A relative of Sompong called Pornsak, 55, said that Sompong was not a bad man but he did have a drinking problem. He said he had warned him to stop especially as he had tuberculosis. 

 

Pornsak said that it was as yet undecided what to do with the bulk of the donations. Seeing as the couple live in a shack it may go towards building a proper house for them.
