As Brexit nears, Boris Johnson pushes for deeper trade ties with Africa

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister Boris Johnson will call for deeper investment ties between Britain and Africa at a summit for leaders of 21 African countries on Monday that comes days before his country will leave the European Union.

 

After securing Britain's departure from the EU, the world's largest trading bloc, on Jan. 31, Johnson is keen to develop business ties with countries outside Europe.

 

At the summit in London, Johnson will call for Britain to be the "investment partner of choice" for Africa. He will highlight deals worth billions of pounds with countries on the continent, underlining the roles British companies are playing in providing anything from smart street lighting in Nigeria to environmentally friendly breweries in Kenya.

 

The prime minister will also announce an end to British support for thermal coal mining or coal power plants overseas, according to a statement issued before the summit's start.

No flies on Boris, plenty of potential in emerging markets such as Africa. 

I am waiting for the he is a liar. The UK are losing there biggest trading partner. Wait to the UK gets Chlorinated chicken.

 

I have come to realise some posters on here want to see the UK do badly and others are just bitter.

 

How about that this will benefit Africa. More jobs for people.

I hope Boris hasn’t been getting these deals from African princes. If he isn’t already, I expect him to now be deluged with offers of dodgy trade deals.  Just don’t give them the UK bank account details.

Indeed. The behavior of the EU in how the new leadership team was elected and how the "future of EU" discussions will progress ought to alarm EU citizens. But it won't. They'll find themselves swallowed into some modern day amalgam of the Holy Roman Empire and Napoleon's Empire. 

 

Some wiser countries might conclude that however nice, the handouts they get aren't enough to be swallowed in this socialist experiment.

People are bound to be sceptical given all the bull*hit and lies we have been fed over the last couple of years.  I am not knocking Boris yet, just waiting to see where we are further down the line.

Yes, much of value comes out of Africa but at a horrible price in blood.

Too late Boris, the Chinese are there now, heavily investing in everything from car plants, railways, power plants, offshore LNG and mining etc. 2018 alone saw investments of around $60 Billion and that figure is continuously rising with Nigeria being the biggest benefactor. Sorry Bo but the UK's time in Africa has long gone.

Additionally there is nothing new to expect. The French and the British already pushed the EC/EU to make several agreements with (mainly) their former colonies (ACP) since 1975. So nothing could have prevented UK from being an "investment partner of choice" before.

Between 1988 and 2016 I worked for a British company executing three projects in Africa each with a value exceeding £100million.

 

What have you done for UK trade in Africa?

I disagree, in the past 28 years I have worked for a British company on three large value projects in Africa.

 

The UK’s membership of the EU was not a barrier to those foreign income earning endeavors.

 

Will such success continue post Brexit is another matter.

Some posters are moire than sceptical they are delirious. The glass is not half full its completely empty. Any trade deal the UK does it is bad from some posters here. These are usually non Brits who have been telling us wrong we are, although we do get some Brits who still cant accept we are leaving the EU.

All very true. The brexiters need any ‘win’, so trade ‘deals’ they could have done anyway will be credited to brexit. In reality they sound like investment deals - and you can make them regardless. 
 

Don’t be surprised if they are soon claiming that winning the ashes and making the World Cup were all possible due to brexit.

Some trade deals will be worse than the EU had, some will be the same and some will be better (big wins possible in the US and China where the EU has had very little success).

 

On top of that we will have our sovereignty back and be free from the EU's anti democratic processes and federalist project. We won't be propping up the net beneficiaries in the EU and we won't answer to the likes of Barnier and Von Der Leyen. What a fantastic start to 2020 it's been.

 

As for the Ashes, that depends on whether your boys get the yellow sandpaper out again. Hope not or they'll be crying like babies again when they get caught out, not unlike you when the exit polls came out. ????
