Prawit orders officials to act against those using fire to clear their fields

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan has asked the Ministry of Interior to order local administration officials to control and stop the burning of field crops in the open.

 

The deputy premier’s orders came after finding fires in five provinces in the northern region and also in the vicinity of Bangkok, seen as the main cause of dust and pollution that pose a threat to public health.

 

Defence Ministry spokesman Kongcheep Tantravanich said on Tuesday (January 28) that Prawit had reiterated the role of the local government in being vigilant and implementing control measures while also providing knowledge and asking people to stop burning in the open.

 

If wrongdoers continue to violate the restrictions, law enforcement must act decisively to set an example, Prawit said.

 

The forest fire and haze control centre in each province, especially in the North, has asked for cooperation in monitoring fire activities while aerial surveillance and ground operations were sought from the Army to support and control the situation and solve the haze problem.

There is no ban on fires currently. Will they give out fines anyway?

I worked with a guy, long time ago, when I was an engineer. He, to put mildly, didnt know much about the job we had to do. Attending a meeting at a pharmaceutical company with him once, it became apparent that he was just saying things that made him sound like he knew his onions and it wasn’t really working out too well for him.

Prawit reminds me of that guy. Open mouth, spew any old <deleted> that sounds knowledgeable, carry on regardless.

The difference being, of course, that the guy I worked with didn’t last long once it was obvious that he was just a chancer.

Ole Fatty can order all he wants, but as usual nobody will take any notice.

Oh I dunno, if he fell flat on top of one of those fires I've no doubt it would douse it PDQ.

It is illegal so ordering officials to do something is the best news so far. I so hope its real.

Slash-and-burn agroecosystems are important to rural poor and indigenous peoples in the developing world. Ecologically sound slash-and-burn agriculture is sustainable because it does not depend upon outside inputs based on fossil energy for fertilizers, pesticides and irrigation.

Maybe you just haven't recognized him. It's the one that has the golden helmet hanging from the scooter handle while he goes to buy the daily M-150 bottle filled with laukhao.

So I guess that means the police are going to continue ACTING like they're doing their job regarding open burning enforcement when in fact they're clearly NOT!

No, the problem is he "asked", not "ordered" (Prawit Wongsuwan has asked).

An "order" is when he's backed up by big guns.

In the picture, he looks like he has surpassed the best-before-date. I think it's time to retire him to one of those posts.

How many slash-and-burn agroecosystems grow sugarcane?  How many sugarcane fields don't use fertilizers, pesticides, and fossil fuels?

Firstly, open fires are banned all year round without a permit ... so, yes, they can be fined.

Secondly, Chiang Mai province (for example) started their fire ban on Jan 12. Some people there have been arrested/jailed/fined. For example, one man has been sentenced to one month in prison and fined 3,000 baht for starting a garbage fire.

Are you certain of that? Usually the fire bans kick around mid February. If true it will be a problem for the villagers in our area. The government is coming out to measure land boundaries and the land that is not cleared can potentially be taken away. Because the government will say they are not farming it and someone else should have it.

We have a piece that we haven't used in a while, and we are cutting t down currently, but of course it will need to be burned if it is to be farmed. It is mountainside. And the same with our neighbors who are cutting down their uncleared land.

There's the answer in the article.  They are going to ask people to stop burning in the    open !  Maybe they could do it indoors ?

I would still consider a farmer as poor who doesn't have the ability to produce off their land without the use of contractors.

Note,50% or more of sugar cane land that the cane is Not burnt when cut will still be burnt afterwards.

Even though burnt cane gets a deduction at the factory,a clean cut load will also have deductions if the stalks are not stripped clean enough.

How many people come to chose to live in Thailand knowing it is 10-20 years behind western society in agriculture.

In how many years would it be expected it to catch up?

The announcement of more factories has most people up in arms.

They would be a great start to see less burning as logistics wise the  leftovers can be baled(value added) and used in power creation at the sites.

Don't be so nasty. One is a lot better than none.

The ban has to start somewhere. One is a good start (and I imagine there has been more).
