The Tourism Authority of Thailand will hold a meeting with the private sector on Tuesday (January 28) to seek remedial measures for those in the tourism sector affected by the coronavirus outbreak, Minister of Tourism and Sports Pipat Ratchakitprakarn said.

The results of the meeting will be placed before the council of economic ministers on January 31.

He will also report the impact of the virus outbreak to Cabinet today. The ministry has already convened a meeting with tourism business operators on Monday on the situation.

TAT governor Yutthasak Supasorn said that the authority will revise the plan to be presented to the economic ministers council on January 31 by focusing on how to remedy affected private parties, a change from the previous focus on boosting tourism.

It will also focus on how to draw tourists from other countries to offset the loss of Chinese tourists.

He added that the number of Chinese arrivals to Thailand is 800,000 on average per month.

Need we remind Thailand , that outside of China, Thailand has the biggest cases of the new illness - how you going to draw them in when they fear coming here ? Offer them two vouchers or access to two free parks ?

And lo and behold 850,000 from other countries will appear  like Moses parting the red sea

Let me guess... another "eat-shop-spend" stimulus with a free face mask thrown in?

Good luck with that. Other Asian countries maybe but the Scandinavians and other Northern Europeans who often book a last minute break at this time of year will weigh up the options and Thailand, and probably other Asian countries, will be well down the pecking order. I'm sure those in the tourism business in Mexico and the Caribbean will be thanking the good people of Wuhan.

As always, he has no fault!

This is an emergency situation. It needs to be dealt with, and it needs a high degree of intelligence and competence. Not something Prayuth or Pipat possess. Someone else needs to handle this, and it needs to be handled yesterday!

What you do not seem to get is that quantity over quality is never a good thing, unless you are selling one dollar items at a swap meet. It just lowers the quality of the experience for all.

The tourism industry is teetering on the edge of a tragic drop, and has already been devastated by this highly destructive administration. All it needs now is a spread of this virus. It could crush millions of families dependent on tourism. I already know one family that has cancelled their trip over here. Why take a chance? Who can trust the Thai authorities, and what they say? Why trust them? What have they done to earn that trust?

You know what they say about putting all of your eggs in one basket? I have been warning of the dangers of becoming too dependent on China for years. Now, after you have made your bed, you get to sleep in it. You have alienated all tourists but Indians and Chinese. Westerners are not coming here anymore for a dozen very good reasons. You insulted us. You demeaned us. You accused us of being evil, and you accused us of being criminals. You mounted campaigns touting us as bad for the nation. You demonstrated deplorable amounts of racism and xenophobia, and fear of the outside world. Some of your officials even went as far as saying we prefer to have tourists that look more like us! And now you want us to come back? Really? How soon you forget. Sorry, but we have not forgotten what was done and said. What we have forgotten is the nation named Thailand. There are too many alternatives now, and they are not only trying harder, they actually have competent people in charge! Surprise!

He won't have many tourists coming from anywhere when they hear how many people, in Thailand, have comes down with this virus.  But don't worry the gov't has it all under control.

The private sector hasn't got a say in that top down approach Face-ty first ridden regime.

They just admitted that they do not have this under control at all. It is all over international news.

Do they really think they will attract other tourists with this news?

Thailands tourist industry is doomed for the next years to come.

They went all-in on China and lost the bet.
