Open an SCB account at any 7-Eleven via facial recognition

Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) and Counter Service Co Ltd are letting non-SCB customers open an online non-passbook savings account at 7-Eleven’s Counter Service using facial recognition technology to verify their identities.

 

The “This is Me at 7-Eleven” campaign lets people open an account using only an ID card without ever having to visit a bank branch.

 

The service, available starting on Thursday (February 6), is expected to add more than a million customers this year alone and pave the way for other financial services in the future.

 

SCB president Apiphan Charoenanusorn said the partnership with Counter Service extends the success of their Banking Agent service partnership launched last year.

 

That collaboration generated Bt31.9 billion worth of transactions, consisting of Bt31.8 billion in deposits and Bt99.5 million in withdrawals, for an average of Bt185.3 million per day.

 

“SCB and Counter Service joined to facilitate cash deposits and withdrawals using SCB account numbers and the SCB Easy mobile application at all 7-Eleven branches,” said Counter Service senior vice president Weeradej Ackapolpanich. 

 

“The service has been welcomed by a large number of customers. This new collaboration will make Counter Service a leading banking agent in Thailand.”

 

To open an account, you insert your ID card in the Electronic Data Capture (EDC) device at the 7-Eleven, have a photo taken for facial recognition, enter your telephone number and a PIN at EDC, agree to the conditions presented and confirm.

 

Then you download the SCB Easy application and fill in the required information to open a non-passbook savings account.

How many people here are Thai citizens and thus able to use this service? 0.001%?

One would assume that the "insert ID card" is the Thai card with a chip, therefore the Thai ID card issued to foreigners with the mag strip would be of no use for this service.

If it could be used it would save a lot of hassle for many foreigners with the challenges in some areas in opening an account.

We don't have Thai ID cards, we can't use the service.

It's totally irrelevant to foreigners.

why? my face should be enough.

Another non core 7/11 facility leading to even longer queues for those wanting just a simple purchase of water etc.

Another way to get your face on a database which can be accessed by goodness knows whom. This place is looking more like China every day.

Thai businesses publish this sort of thing in English because they want to appear modern, connected to the wider world, and having the latest technology.

They are trying to push for the cashless agenda when they can put your account to zero because you have been a 'naughty boy' like the Chinese system.

 

No passbook – how to prove you still have money in the account when there are errors? And what happens when the system goes down?

 

Depending on everything going digital will create a nightmare. Also, it creates a total lack of security as is being done already.

yes perhaps Thai Visa would be doing its users a service if the headline was:

 

SCB excluded non Thais from opening an SCB account at any 7-Eleven via facial recognition.

or

No provision for foreign ID with new SCB account at 7-Eleven via facial recognition.

or

Time for a national ID card for non Thais.

 

Then perhaps if SCB and all other Thai institutions were to read a constant drumbeat of discrimination against foreigners they might do something about it.

7 staff burdened enough so just add more non purchase related things to do
