Respiratory illnesses spread, in particle or droplet form and moisture can transport the particles. Unfortunately, the masks that we see being handed out in Thailand and worn in much of China are relatively ineffective against a virus. They help against larger direct splashes but in order for a mask to be effective it must form a close fit. The public health services in the developed world are treating this as an airborne pathogen (same as SARS) and that's why the effective mask levels start with an N95 respirator. These masks with the valve are designed to fit tightly around the nose and mouth, and, when worn correctly, block out at least 95% of small airborne particles. However, you need to have a tight fit. That's the issue: A mask is useless if there isn't an airtight fit and those 7-11 type masks don't do the job. So yes indeed, masks work, but they need to be the right type of mask. BTW, did you know that some countries mandate that all health workers be certified to wear such masks because the fit has to be good. Trust this clarifies for you.
