The Department of Intellectual Property will continue promoting geographical indication (GI) products this year while planning sales at major department stores through boosting their image , said director general Thosapone Dunsuputra.

We planned to hold ‘GI Market’ twice this year, at CentralPlaza Chaengwattana during March 26 to April 1, and Central Plaza Grand Rama 9 from July 27 to August 1, he said.

“ 60 entrepreneurs are expected to participate in each event , or a total of 120 persons” he added.

The department would also exhibit GI products at two annual international exhibitions to be held inThailand - THAIFEX-World of Food Asia 2020 and Style Bangkok 2020, for sales opportunities of Thai GI products in the foreign markets.

In 2019, GI product sales at GI Market amounted to Bt10.335 million;THAIFEX 2019, Bt631.13 million; and Style Bangkok 2019, Bt1.183 million.

The 'Rice Matching' event last year generated Bt300 million from Memorandum of Understanding signings , the director general added.

So what the hell does GI (Geographical Indication) mean anyway? Ages ago I was trying to read the Thai label on some Big C bakery bread and the only English characters were Gi. I thought it must be something to do with gluten so I asked the missus and the staff what it meant. No one knew! TIT!
