The Thai Agro Exchange (Talaadthai), backed by the Commerce Ministry’s Department of Internal Trade, is ready to roll out a caravan of grocery trucks – popularly known as pumpuang – to provision citizens during the Covid-19 crisis and discourage the stockpiling of goods.

Vice president Chokchai Kolsrichai said on Friday (March 27) that Talaadthai wanted to help people get through the crisis, “using our experience as an important wholesale and retail marketer”.

“Five hundred mobile grocery entrepreneurs will load their trucks with both fresh and dried foods and other essential goods such as hand gels for people who need these products but can’t or don’t want to leave home,” he said.

Anyone who’s been laid off work due to the crisis and owns a truck is welcome to join the mobile-grocery network and can earn some money. They can call (02) 264 6264 or go to @talaadthai on Line.

“We’ve already prepared a parking area big enough to accommodate a lot of trucks,” Chokchai said.

Always a skeptic when the needs of the people are being thought of in a humanitarian way.....

Well, Talad Thai is in northern Bangkok's Rangsit area on Pahonyothin. Good for the greater Bangkok area.

There may be similar ideas in other provinces, as long as the vendors don't try to rip people off too much.

It sounds as if the prices will be the Government price that has been set for each item

It's better than everybody cramming into a petri dish talad. Would be perfect if you could just leave a shopping list and payment in a basket next to the house door and they'd fill it and take the cash.

Reminds me of when I was a kid growing up, the Altadena Dairy would deliver what you wanted on a regular basis.  My grandfather was a Carnation Milk Man, and delivered fresh milk, and butter to houses in the early morning, picking up the empty bottles as he delivered the new ones, and always leaving a Carnation Flower for the lady of the house.....life was so much simpler then, and not the rat race it has become.

I seem to remember that a few weeks ago the government was talking about banning travelling markets and house to house motorcy vendors for this very reason. The thought may be humanitarian, but the execution could prove disastrous.

This may well work, but how do you prevent these vendors from stopping at each house for a friendly chat?

Had a Mothers Pride franchise in Leicester back in the early seventies, mini claim to fame, Peter Shilton was a customer. Good business until supermarkets started a price war with bread as a loss leader, killed the franchise almost overnight.

Started selling advertising space but had to use the bread van for transport til had enough funds for more conventional transport.
