Nationwide transport use decreased by only 40 per cent after the emergency decree was announced – far lower than the 90 per cent expected by the government.

Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration spokesman Taweesin Visanuyothin said that after the emergency was clamped on March 28, the transportation rate of public buses decreased by 45.5 per cent and personal cars by 41.3 per cent – 2 million to 1.2 million.

The number of MRT and BTS passengers dropped from 300,000 to 40,000 a day, but statistics show this will not be enough to prevent Covid-19 from spreading.

Public Health Ministry permanent secretary Sukhum Kanchanapimai said that between March 27 and 28, the number of visitors to crowded areas fell by 71 per cent, while 67.9 per cent of residents followed the social-distancing measure.

He said if 95 per cent of people strictly abided by the Public Health Ministry’s measures, the prevention of Covid-19 in the country would become very effective and a success.

The whole purpose is to slow the infection rate so hospitals and health care officials are not overrun with patients.

There is no "prevent Covid-19 from spreading"  Once bans are lifted, people will get the flu just like they always do

Otherwise, the government will cause mass starvation and homelessness as people who cannot work will run out of money while everything is closed for months on end.  That is currently the moral/humanitarian dilemma that those governments who have shut down their countries are facing IMO,

The is no prevention until a vaccine is developed and that is 12-18 months away.

Actually an interesting factor. What  was the  reason for establishing this statistic? If  nothing else  it does  contradict the perception of so many that  the Thai administration is uncoordinated in approach to issues.

A deliberate form of measure in determining what ? Compliance to or  effectiveness of a decree? The difference may  not immediately  be obvious to  other than those  who have in their  capacity  to enforce stricter compliance by means of more  draconian decrees.
