The Who Wants to be a Millionaire? cheating scandal – what really happened?

Tonight sees the first episode of Quiz, the ITV drama about how Charles Ingram, the “coughing Major”, won £1 million on the show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire in 2001, then was exposed as a cheat and lost it all.

 

Matthew Macfadyen plays Ingram, with Sian Clifford (best known as Claire in Fleabag) as his wife Diana, while Michael Sheen takes the role of the show’s host Chris Tarrant. 

 

The outline of the case is well-known. Ingram managed to win the grand prize becoming only the ITV show’s third millionaire, despite vacillating over a number of questions throughout his run. The couple were accused of having an accomplice, Tecwen Whittock, who’d coughed to signal which answer Ingram should give. 

 

The show’s producers withdrew the prize, and the Ingrams (and Whittock) were convicted of deception in court. Ingram was also stripped of his military rank.

Is this Great Britain trying to make some kind of Reality/drama mainstream TV?

 

Maybe they think they can replicate Tiger King's success/notoriety, but it will never happen.

 

Still waiting for something that can live up to the original "The Office" (with Gervais) - best british TV in decades.

If the guy was a Thai i would see remarks like cheating is in their genes. I bet that remark wont be made now. 

The answer is a no brainer and why did he have to cheat - oh, to get to GBP 500,000. I see!!

Would never have worked here only coughing generals avalible ????

???  I don't see the connection to Trump , yet.  Come on guys, must be some way to blame the Great Orange One.  Put on those ten foil hats and have at it. 

He should have worn a mask (the cougher that is ).
