I am new to growing anything and would like to grow a little bit of produce on my rental. The land isn't great, and seems like hard clay, and I am wondering what would grow easily in small patches of land here, something that can work in the sunny areas, and something in a shaded area?

You can grow cherry tomatos, they grow in anything, just be careful to water the seeds alot to start, then get ready for jurasic park, they grow everywhere and fast, and if one of them breaks off and rolls down the road then it starts all over again
