The amount of garbage in Bangkok’s canals is increasing and is starting to block the sewer system causing floods in many areas, the city chief said.

Bangkok Governor Pol Gen Asawin Kwanmuang said just the removal of garbage from canals in Lat Phrao district and under Pradit Manutham Road required five trucks.

The area is one kilometre away from a Rama 9 pumping station which drains water from Lat Phrao Canal and Saen Saeb Canal to Chao Phraya River.

If the garbage blocks the pipes and the tunnels, Bangkok will not be able to drain water during floods in the rainy season, he said.

The same problem is found in other districts, such as Chatuchak. The governor has asked Bangkok residents to take this issue seriously.

Those must have been BIG trucks if it only took 5.  Or maybe that's 5 trucks working full time for weeks on end.

Well Mr. Governor, why did it become to be that bad? could it be that your sanitary and garbage collection department are not doing their jobs properly sir? blaming others is easy, put some of those prisoners that we see often cleaning the sewerage system to clean those canals as well...

Get more trucks and people and remove it.

See,easy to be a governor.

How does it get there, surely people don't just throw their rubbish in the canal.

There again if you saw the astonishing build up of rubbish around the multiple blue bins in our village, I shouldn't be surprised at anything.

More money spent on things like clearing the rubbish equals less money in the pocket, that'll be why he's complaining...

But but they had to do their overseas study tour before their tenure expired, and because of the COVID 19 requirements they needed to take their wives, husbands, children, grandparents and aunts/uncles and their families plus 4 additional doctors/nurses to measure temperatures every day etc.

And because their enterage was so big the tour had to be expanded an additional 5 days to allow for shopping in 3 cities plus 3 more tour organizers plus 10 more staff to carry the beautiful packages and shopping bags.

And when they got back they had to quarantine for 14 days so no work.

the disease & rats from all this trash will be much worse than covid, a new garbage lockdown ?

Lots of unemployed, get them working on the canals, klongs, waterways, ditches whatever...

no excuses.

This is what Thai's are taught at birth. Open , unwrap and toss, then eat item. Absolutely 0 foresight. No garbage on my property, taught the folks and children garbage belongs in the trash can. Our place is spic and span and everyone enjoys a clean environment and visitors are overwhelmed with the cleanliness also. People can learn if taught.

It's not getting better by warning Anyone. They can fix it Easy Get a Squad together an Police the canals, Fine /lockup the offenders that trow rubbish in the canals . They also must clean the canals often not just ones a yr.

Still an abundance of plastic bags and foam boxes by the look of it!!

PLEASE, clean out the floodgates in Bangna, draining into the Chao Phraya. I don't want to be bailing all night again because YOU didn't open them until Central Bangna complained! Then PDQ (of course)! 5T of refuse collected from this single floodgate.

I guess the people they complain most about a flooding of their houses are the same they throw their garbage in the nature.

I saw picture and story on thaivisa a week os so ago as to all canals in Bangkok were being cleaned up. Just shows you what a load of bullsh*t papers write.

Trash is everywhere-do something about it.  Thai people trash and burn the whole country
