mittheimp
providing you don't deal in drugs, traffick women or act a total prat then Thailand is a as safe from shootings as nearly everywhere! MarkBKK
Thailand is number three for murder by firearms! Very, very old news. Also out of date (2000?). I haven't seen newer figures though. Be interesting to see the effects of the ''war'' on drugs and the recent troubles in the South. [EDIT: Whoops. Stop for a sip of coffee and the world posts the same thing ...] Edited April 18, 2007 by MarkBKK

PhilHarries
Do yopu know if those statistics include either the 'war on drugs' or the problems in the south? I doubt if it includes Thaksin's war on drugs as they were not reported nor classified as murders but obviously the value of any set of statistics is dependant on the source. Mobi
I have read back through the posts and I can't see anyone who even suggested that we shouldn't worry about the statistics. Challenge the accuracy of the stats? - yes Not worry about them? - no sign of that. I too thought that Mr Samran was being a tad unfriendly, but I can now see his point. Where do you come from with this anti Yank crap? BTW I am English, for my sins.

Not very friendly, is it? Hey, I'm a real friendly guy!! Just trying to do everyone a favour. As a mod, this type of thread is same-old, same-old if they aren't kept on a particularly tight leash. Starts off innocent enough. Someone then starts the yank bashing, introducing a very tenuous link between Thailand and certain incidents in the US. Someone comes into defend the whatever US ammendemnt it is Starts not being not very Thai related. Starts getting all personal. Lots of posts are then deleted by us mods. We then close it. So lets try and keep the chat/debate intelligent. Look at it this way, I'm saving the yank/brit/aussie bashing in advance. You should be thanking me bwotha. Mobi
It's all a bit of a joke - I wonder where the stats come from? SOURCE: Seventh United Nations Survey of Crime Trends and Operations of Criminal Justice Systems, covering the period 1998 - 2000 (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Centre for International Crime Prevention) Quite... but who IN THAILAND provided the UN with the Thai Stats? The Thai Police? The Thai Justice department? And we all know how diligent and professional all those folks are, don't we? As I said - a bit of a joke. Jimjim
These stats have been hashed out on other threads many times. This is nothing new. Turns out, it looks like the stats for murder by firearm are incorrect for Thailand. The total number of murders in Thailand on the site is listed at something like 5400. Then, you look at the firearm murder and it is 20,000 or something. So how could there be more firearm murders than total murders? High rate of murder? Somewhat. But is it 3rd on the list for murder by firearm? Probably not, given that the statistics seem to be way off. Perhaps an extra 0 was added in and it was meant to be 2000 or so for Thailand murders by firearm. Edited April 18, 2007 by Jimjim

wilko
I would think it's fairly safe to say that countries where firearms are readily available tend to have the highest gun crime rates and in Thailand it's very easy to legally own a gun. If you want a real shocker, look at the gun magazines and the weaponry they adulate.
bmanly
General Comment.Lets keep this thread Thailand related, based on facts. The second this post goes off the rails, it will be closed. That's a good idea. In 17 years of coming here and spending long periods of time here I have only ever seen Police, Army, and very few Security Officers in banks armed. I only ever once saw 1 citizen with a pistol but he claimed he was a sportsman and had a license for it. I have never seen a weapon drawn or a crime committed by one, yet. Having said that I have no illusions that there are plenty of firearms in the community, you only have to read about the daily shootings and murders. If you stay out of trouble you may never need to look down the barrel of gun, just be a nice person. Edited April 18, 2007 by bmanly
GuestHouse
In the first few weeks after our new manager came out to Thailand, he, myself and one other long term expat took a road trip up north. While driving along a quiet provincial road he was expressing this familiar view (often heard from newbees and people who don't live in Thailand) that 'the Thais are such placid people, not at all violent'. No sooner had he finished saying this, and I mean within just a few moments, a pick-up truck shot passed us, pursued at speed by a Merc. Three or four miles further down the road we came around a bend and where stopped by these two vehicles almost blocking the road. The Mec was pulled across the road in front of the Pick-up. The driver of the pick-up was on his knees The driver of the Merc was standing in front of him holding a f'king big hand gun at the pick-up driver's head The wife/girlfriend of the Merc driver was going frantic trying to calm him down. Our new manager was nearly shitting himself, urging me to drive past and ignore what was going on. Like as if I needed telling.
