Yesterday I had a Bronchoscopy and had an awful time of it.

I had previously spoken to somebody who had undergone this procedure and said she couldn't remember much about it because she was sedated.

Well, I remember nearly all of it, the overall sensation of drowning, the gurgling, the moaning and groaning and being sick all over my left shoulder.

My groans and general unhappiness could be heard thru the operating theatre door and a closed patients room as my wife then opened it to check on the noise.

Now my questions are, has anybody else gone thru this or know anybody who has and if so did you/they have similar reactions.

I have checked the internet and can find no info regarding my extreme reaction, I have asked the medical staff involved and said there was nothing extraordinary in what happened.

We were close to the operating theatre for the previous 3 hours and apart from the coughing immediately after the tube is removed, nothing like the general commotion I caused.

A senior nurse who checked up on me immediately after the procedure, rushed off and got the staff who were there during the procedure but they didn't seem overly concerned.

Any thoughts? Did my sedative not work properly, not strong enough?

I am quite used to being ill and procedures, so this reaction has quite surprized me.

I would be interested in any contribution

It could be that not enough sedative was administered, or it could be just that you were fighting it. My father has had upper GI's (i know not the same thing but still), where they put him on his side and he is out...one other time was very difficult for him because either the sedative did not do its job or he was nervous and fought it.

Anesthesia is not always perfect. What works for one person doesn't necessarily work for the next...even if said individuals are the same height, weight etc.

Hi Jamie,

First of all thank you for your comment, I am aware that sedatives can have differing degrees of success for differing types of people.

I would suggest, without knowing for sure, that you are correct in stating that I was probably fighting it, the fact that a Nurse was holding me down and stating, ' Calm down, Calm down', with a certain likeness and parody of a well known Scouse comedic character lies testament to that. :o

However, today I asked a specialist TB Registrar about my reaction and he was surprized at my recollection, which just enforces my initial conclusion that they may have administered an incorrect dosage for my needs.

Although he said the pain killers I take should not have had any adverse reaction.

Oh well, it's over now, T.G.
