Thailand reports no new domestic COVID-19 cases for 38 consecutive days

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand on Thursday reported six new coronavirus cases, all of which were imported from abroad, marking 38 successive days without any domestic transmission.

 

The new cases were four Thai nationals returning from Indonesia, one from South Africa and one from Sudan, said Panprapa Yongtrakul, a spokeswoman for the government's COVID-19 Administration Centre. All were detected in state quarantine.

 

The coronavirus has killed 58 people in Thailand, among 3,179 infections, of which 3,059 patients have recovered.

Six new Covid-19 cases in state quarantine

There were six cases of Covid-19 over a 24-hour period, the government’s Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said on Thursday (July 2).

 

All six patients were male.

 

Four of the new patients had returned from Indonesia. They included a 21-year-old student and three workers aged 37, 45, and 62 who were in state quarantine in Chonburi. They were asymptomatic and tested positive on the fifth day in quarantine, Dr Panprapa Yongtrakul, assistant spokeswoman of the CCSA, said

 

A 20-year-old student, who had cough symptoms for a week, had returned from South Africa on June 28. There were 106 passengers on the same flight screened at Suvarnabhumi airport.

 

A 21-year-old worker who had returned from Sudan was asymptomatic and tested positive on the fifth day of state quarantine in Chonburi.

 

As of July 2, the total number of confirmed cases in the country since the outbreak stood at 3,179 (2,444 domestic cases and 242 in state quarantine) -- 62 are under treatment, 3,059 have recovered and been discharged, and there have been 58 deaths.

 

Globally, the total number of confirmed cases reached 10.8 million, up by over 200,000 on Wednesday -- the highest daily confirmed cases since the pandemic began -- while 5.9 million have recovered and more than 518,000 have died.
