No written, driving tests needed to extend licences for now

People wishing to renew their driver’s licence will not be required to undergo written and driving tests until the Covid-19 situation comes to an end.

The Royal Gazette website published the Department of Land Transport’s new regulations on Wednesday (July 1).

The new rules, signed by the department’s director general Jirut Wisanjit, said mandatory written and driving tests have been cancelled for people whose licence has expired as per the following:

• The holder of a licence that has expired more than one year but not exceeding three years between March 31 and September 30, 2020, will not be required to take a written test;

• The holder of a licence that has expired for more than three years between March 31 and September 30, 2020, will not be required to take a driving test.

These regulations have been in effect since June 8.

The reason cited for this cancellation of tests is to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and to help those who have not been able to renew their driving licence due to lockdown measures.

Another fine article by the Nation with absolutely no useful information.

My license expires in October.

Can I renew it ONLINE? Gee, that would be the intelligent thing to do, huh?

So you know they'll never do it...

How hard is it to get a driving licence here?   My Hong Kong Licence expired 20 years ago, so I'd need at least 15 mins in a manual car to familiarise myself with driving again before doing a test.

Has anyone taken driving lessons in Bangkok?

I have just extended my 5 year driving license that would expire on July 31 2020. Before you go to the Land and Transport office you have to attend the online course. Here is the website http://www.dlt-elearning.com. It is a video, of course only in Thai language. You have to Login in with your driving license number and passport number. Problem is that it doesn't accept passport number it is only for Thai ID, but you can enter you passport numbers -no letters and in front add as many zeros to get a 13 digit number. When you are logged in you have to watch a video and while watching the video you will see a pop-up window with a question. In all there are 3 questions during this video. ( use google chrome browser) If you are not fluent in Thai I recommend you have a Thai person next to you for assistence. At the end take a photo with your phone that confirms you did the course. When you go to L & T office have a residency confirmation letter from immigration, copy of your passport. There they will check if you did the course and after tests of eyesight and reflexes you will be issued with a new a 5 year license. I think it cost me about 150THB. This was my experience. No problems.

That's a new one .

Online course for extending a valid license.

Is this a new thing just come in or specific to your area ?

This news is only about licenses which expired more than a year ago, nothing new if the license expired less than a year ago.

Somehow this didn't reach the DLT in Pattaya.

I went there this morning to make an appointment for renewal.

As my car licence expired 1 month short of 3 years, I do fall into the category described in this article.

They told me I had to do the theoretical test.

But Nowhereman's  license had not expired . It was current till the end of this month.

The last time I went to the test centre with the mrs the so called test involed stopping at a white line, driving down a lane of cones and reversing, not hitting any and reversing in and out of a box area of cones. As well as colour blindless and reaction tests as well as watching a film where most people look at their phone or sleep. So they can get, or at least a few years ago, a license without ever driven on the road. What could possibly go wrong ????

It is enforced nationwide to curb spread of Covid-19 and it is in force at list until end of July.  After that they may continue with the watching mandatory 1 hour video at Land and Transport office.

I understand that , but why the questions and answers , that is not standard on the 1hr mandatory video ?

Not in Chiang Mai. They gave me an appointment in 10 days to watch a video at the DLT and extend my license.

Well that's what I have been told. And what I did. Maybe Chiang Mai arranged it differently as there are many foreign residents. Who would know.
