webfact
Rafts floating in reservoir crash from sudden rush of water By The Nation Two rafts tethered on the shore of the Sirindhorn Dam slammed against one another when the dam gates were suddenly opened creating a strong current on Monday (July 6). A clip of the incident has gone viral on social media. Wuttichai Khamjun, 33, the raft operator, said the dam gates are normally opened between 10am and noon, and that he had taken 15 visitors onboard his raft at about 3pm on Monday. Some visitors jumped into the water to swim, but when Wuttichai saw strong currents in the water he advised them to jump back on the raft. He said the current then became so strong that the rope tethering the raft snapped causing it to crash against the neighbouring raft. The incident caused about Bt10,000 worth of damages. Sirindhorn Dam official Sangwan Phromsamlee said the gate was closed as soon as officials learned about it being opened, adding that the incident will be investigated, and a solution sought to prevent a repeat. SantiSuk
"The shore of Sirindhorn Dam" doesn't make much sense - there are party rafts both in Sirindhorn Reservoir (was there on a party boat with extended family myself on Sunday 5th) and the outflow river (have been there a couple of times also). I suspect they mean that it was the rafts in the outflow river which would provide quite a surge if the rafts were located at the dam end of that river. Boats on the reservoir aren't allowed anywhere near the dam itself. Notwithstanding this stupid and man-made incident the Sirindhorn rafts (see pics) are a great way to spend a day with the right company - provided you take some ear plugs when the karaoke gets going! [Picture is of Ubon and Songkhla Hash House Harriers get together on a Sirindhorn Dam outfall river party raft in April 2017 and the video is of party rafts on the Sirindhorn Reservoir earlier this week] 20200705_125036[1].mp4
