Beyoncé Black is King review: A sumptuous, breathtaking celebration of ancestry

If the public is tiring of Disney doggedly remaking all of its old animations in live action format, finally some original content is coming out of the project as well.

In a remarkable feat of cross pollination, Beyoncé has now made a companion film to the album that she recorded to accompany the Lion King remake.

The Lion King: The Gift, released a year ago, was not a soundtrack album but a collection of new songs inspired by the movie which brought together a huge range of intercontinental black talent: Kendrick Lamar and Jay-Z shared song space with Nigeria’s Burna Boy, Moonchild Sanelly of South Africa and Oumou Sangaré of Mali.

Now Beyoncé has expanded the experiment much further. Black is King, released on the Disney+ streaming service this morning, is not a movie with a clear plot but a “visual album” in the manner of her Lemonade collection from 2016.

I am sure an album called "White is King" would be classed as racist.

Change a couple of words and it becomes hate speech. The radical black identitarian movement will eventually create a generation of radical white nationalists.

I'm sure the person that selects what news is displayed on TV must be giggling to themselves as to what response some of these will get.

And wouldn't be anywhere near as good.

Trying to think of the last 'black' song I enjoyed ....... 2 live crew ...... me so horny.

Eminem was good ..... but not black.

Like Reggaeton and Bachata ........ but that's Latino.

Recently, nothing from black people worth listening.

Plenty from non-whites though.

lol, posting this on probably the most racist social media site I've read - but I guess that's the point isn't it..

There is the Beatles' White Album...maybe nowhere near as good as "Black is King" and yet who will remember the latter 50 years from now?

It's not racist at all - just people who racialise everything so they can be angry* think it is.

*guarantee they are all white.

I was particularly impressed with the production values and I certainly enjoyed the finished product.

You could be correct and I certainly won't be around to comment on either :whistling:
