Phuket beach cleanup nets 1.5 tonnes of trash

PHUKET:-- More than 1.5 tonnes of marine debris and trash was recovered from Nai Yang and Mai Khao beaches and the areas immediately offshore in a mass cleanup today (Aug 21).

 

The cleanup was organised by officers from Phuket’s Sirinath National Park, park chief Natthawat Nuisriram explained to The Phuket News.

 

The cleanup began at 10am, with five park officers taking part, eight national park divers along with expats and other local residents lending a hand, he explained. In total about 50 people joined the cleanup, which continued until about midday, he added.

So, from the total population of Phuket, only 50 people helped with the clean up. That's pathetic and reflects the Thai attitude to rubbish and how much they care about their environment.  Don't they have any trustee prisoners or people doing community service who could be made to do this job ?

Well its pretty flaming pointless to clean up the beaches when you have idiots advertising this is what they do on their boat tours only a few hours ago...Polluting the oceans, discracefull conduct

Not to forget that a tonne is a metric measure.  Just to complicate things the UK long ton is 2240 pounds while the US short ton is 2000 pounds.  A lot of people believe the tonne is a ton but do not realise the differences between long and short tons.

Well done the volunteers.

However, the local authorities should be responsible for regular cleaning of beaches in their bailiwick. They are never slow to profit from the beaches.
